Numerology - Does It Really Work?

Like many others, several decades ago, I was attracted to many of the metaphysical sciences and especially numerology.

Though numerology is probably the least known or understood of the metaphysical sciences it is currently enjoying a massive revival. Is this revival due to the current global issues our society is confronted with, and can numerology assist in fixing the issues many are feeling threatened by?

In the very basic of terms numerology is formulated on the idea that everything in the universe is made up of and is affected by numbers. Numerology has been well documented through the eons of civilization and it is now believed that Numerology is probably the oldest science known to man.

In early Hebrew history the interpretation of numbers was considered highly important. Letters of the Hebrew alphabet was based on numbers. It was said that the relationship of the letter and the number were both interconnected with the cosmic forces. Later during the Middle Ages a numerical mysticism evolved from the teachings of Merkabah which was a sect of Judaism. Then in the 13th century the German Kabbalists developed Gematria, a mystic numerical interpretation of the Scriptures.

Evidence also exists regarding the use of numerology thousands of years ago in China, Rome, Japan and Greece. The ancient Greeks have given us a myriad of technological and scientific data that becomes even more relevant as time advances and it is the Greek philosopher Pythagoras with whom we credit for the modern day versions of Numerology. It is very true that Pythagoras did not invent numerology however it was his theories that took numerology to a different level. Hence the reason as to why Pythagoras is credited with being the father of numerology.

From the beginning of the twentieth century several mystics and authors have added their interpretation to form what we have today as modern numerology.

None of this answers the question though - "Does it really work?"

Over these past two decades I have immersed myself in learning what I can in regards to the numbers and how they can affect, influence or assist me in manipulating my every day life.

I used to spend hours wandering through hundreds of Healing Fairs, being engrossed with the various stalls. I have spent hours watching with great anticipation while people handed over their hard earned cash for tarot card readings, astrology charts and the like.

I used to think that just maybe there was something in what many of my friends thought was just a lot of mumbo jumbo.

On one of those many occasions I saw one guy who was doing numerology readings from his lap top. We got chatting and it wasn't long before I had invested in my very own computer numerology program. Now I had already spent hours researching my name, my date of birth, where I lived via what I love to call my numerology bible.

You might ask, why, for what reason did you want to compare the two different systems of numerology. Well my friend my aim was to prove that my so called bible and this computer program would produce different sets of information.

For the first sixth months I had immense fun keying in everything I possible could, each time becoming more and more impressed with the information that I produced.

No, I could not prove that either was wrong, the information was the same and oh so accurate. You might also ask - why is this so? Easy, you see, numbers affect our every day existence because based on name at birth and the date of birth the entire information about one's life is readily available. Things can change in one's life, yet one thing is constant, the date of one's birth.

Over the years the more I study numerology, the more I begin to understand how very substantial readings are. You see your name does literally contain a powerhouse of vital information about your life, your potential and your future. Numerology is a language that allows you to expand the horizon of your spiritual awareness. It opens doors in your psyche that perhaps at this time you do not even know exist.

Remember you are living in a society where no matter what type of job you have, at some stage you have to deal with others. The others could be your boss, your friends, your colleagues, other workers, government officials, your partners, business associates, and your family. The list is endless. You may find that dealing with some people is easy and with others it is difficult. You have to treat or deal with everyone and every situation differently so as to reach what we all call a comfort level otherwise the relationship can be a disaster. No matter what your reason for trying to make an impact on someone, numerology can go a long way towards assisting you in figuring out what makes someone lean in your favor. What Is Numerology?

Numerology is the study of the symbolism of numbers. It is used to determine a person's personality, strengths and talents, obstacles to be overcome, inner needs, emotional reactions and ways of dealing with others.

A Little History

The roots of numerology can be traced back some 10,000 years or more to Egypt and Babylonia. Pythagoras, who developed many of the basic theorems that form the foundation of modern mathematics (including the right triangle theorem taught in math classes today) is credited with formally organizing the field about 2600 years ago in ancient Greece. At the turn of the twentieth century, an American woman, L. Dow Balliet, and several of her contemporaries published a few books and started the modern phase of numerology. The field grew slowly through several decades. Now, in the last half of the century, increased research and publishing along with a marked resurgence of interest in numerology is taking place.

How Numerology Works

Everything in the universe vibrates at its own particular frequency. By finding the vibration rate of any object, you can establish the qualities and energies associated with it. By applying the principles of numerology -- and using only the name and birth date as the basic data -- you can determine the major frequencies of different people. A numerological analysis of the calculated frequencies provides significant information on these people's personalities and character.

The Basic Numerology Calculation

In the basic mathematical operation used in numerology, the numbers are reduced by simple addition. The number 15, for instance, is reduced by adding 1 + 5 to get 6. Similarly, the number 1974 can be reduced by adding 1 + 9 + 7 + 4 to get 21. The 21 can be further reduced by adding 2 + 1 to get 3.

In numerology, all numbers are reduced to the single digits 1 through 9 except the special master numbers 11 and 22. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 22 represent the major vibration rates associated with people's characteristics.

Letters in individuals' names are converted to numbers and then added together. These numbers, in turn, are also reduced. The letter A, for instance, is 1; the letter B is 2; the letter C is 3, and so forth. The following table shows the numbers assigned to all 26 letters in the English alphabet.

By applying simple mathematical formulas to the numbers representing a person's name and birth date, a numerologist can derive four major core elements and some twenty or thirty modifiers. A symbolic evaluation of these elements and modifiers provides a remarkably complete and accurate character analysis. (About half the information in the analysis, incidentally, comes from the birth date and half from the name.)

The Symbolism Of Numbers

The symbolic analysis of the single digits and master numbers is the essence of a numerological character analysis. Since so many numbers are present and modify each other, the analysis is, as you might expect, a considerably complex operation. When you understand the basic symbolism of the numbers outlined below, though, you'll have a useful grasp which should make it easier for you to interpret the various parts of a numerology reading.

1: Independence, Individuality, Attainment; Leadership, Pioneering, Administrating.

This number brings strong leadership potential. As a person with this number develops this ability, they may be able to assume a significant position in the business or political world. One of the major lessons of this number is to learn the benefits of being independent. A person with this number must first learn to stand comfortably on their own two feet without leaning on other people. After that, they can advance themselves by using their ability for organizing, leading and managing. Some people spend much of their lives on the first part of the lesson. This number brings strong business ability. One of the major lessons of this number is to learn to give of oneself as selflessly as possible, without thought of reward or return. As one can well imagine, this is a difficult lesson to put into practice. Much of a person's effort may be spent in learning to balance their personal needs and ambitions, however large or small, against their inborn desire to contribute to those in need.

11: Illumination, Nervous Tension; Spiritual Channel and Teacher.

When those with this number use their spiritual awareness, they can intuitively perceive a great deal about the non-material world -- and religious, psychic or metaphysical forces. They have the potential to act as a channel for these awareness's. 22: Master Builder, Latent Power, Nervous Tension; Spiritual Understanding of Material World, High Ideals.

When those with this number use their spiritual awareness, they are likely to intuitively perceive a great deal about the non-material world -- and religious, psychic or metaphysical forces. They have the potential to apply these unique philosophical perceptions to the accomplishment of practical, down-to-earth undertakings. They may be able to develop or manage sizable ventures, particularly ventures with significant humanitarian ends. Learning to use their non-material understandings for the benefit of the material world may prove to be one of the more important lessons in their life.

The two most important parts of a numerology reading are the Life Path and Expression which are described below. Using the above number descriptions, you can get a basic idea of what your numbers mean.

Life Path

The Life Path is the most important number in a numerology reading. If you could only use one number to describe a person, that number would, undoubtedly, be the Life Path.

The Life Path describes the major lessons to be learned in a person's life. These lessons often determine the central focus of the life. The Life Path also clarifies the environment which is most conducive to learning the lessons involved and describes, as well, some of the major characteristics likely to be present in the individual's makeup. Most people have little trouble relating to their Life Path. Some people, though, for their own reasons, have little interest in pursuing that particular direction.

The Life Path is derived by calculating the sum of the month, day and year of birth, and reducing to a single digit or master number.

Expression

The Expression is another important number. It describes a person's potential talents -- the natural abilities as well as the related character traits. For most of us, these talents and skills are there at birth, although they are usually further developed as an individual grows and matures. Very often -- but not always -- these particular abilities are of primary importance in a person's work and career. Frequently, the talents described by the Expression form the central feature of an individual's career.

The Expression is derived by calculating the sum of the number values of all the letters in the name -- for example, the letters in the full name appearing on the birth certificate, and reducing to a single digit or master number.

A Basic Primer In Numerology Calculations

The usual assumption of individuals, who have not been subjected to the study of numerology, is that numerology calculations are very advanced and require a high intellect for mathematics. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, numerology calculations are very easy to perform; however, the unravelling of numerology calculations can become a bit more complicated. Like any specialized craft, numerology requires experience and practise in order to develop proficiency.

Numerology calculations are divided into two common categories: numerology birth date and numerological name. Each letter of the name has an associated number with a specific vibration, and these numbers, along with the numbers in the birth date, provide information about underlying talents, a person's character, and allow them to make educated life decisions.

We will start with two birth date numerology calculations Life Path Number & Day of Birth Number and use Linda Judith Johnson born on April 12, 1965 for our example throughout the article.

Life Path Number: The Life Path Number is the simplest of all numerology calculations; however, it is normally deemed the most important numerological number. It is an exterior influence number and can assist in uncovering deep-rooted abilities & skills, identify personality characteristics, grasp opportunities, and show your path in life.

The Life Path Number is calculated by adding the numbers in your birth date together until you reach a single digit. The only notable exceptions are numerology number 11 and numerological number 22, which are very forceful numbers called Master Numbers. In this example Linda's Life Path Number is calculated as follows:

April 12, 1965 = 0+4+1+2+1+9+6+5 = 28 2+8 =10 1+0=1

Day of Birth Number: This number provides your birth given characteristics. It can be regarded as your trademark as you journey through life. Although viewed as the least significant of the four core numerological numbers, it can often disclose a very unique ability that you may otherwise not know you possess. Again, a singular number, its numerology calculation is simply the sum of your birth day. In the example, Susan's Day of Birth Number is calculated as follows:

Destiny Number: frequently referred to as your Expression number, the Destiny Number can be characterized as your "Reason in Life". It provides a road map from the outset of your life to the end. It notifies you when to exercise prudence and when to recognize opportunities. It is a very partisan number and provides a sense of "You", from a intense personal level.

The numerology calculation of the Destiny Number is based on assigning a specific number to each letter of your total birth name. The following chart demonstrates the numbers from 1 - 9 assigned to each letter of the alphabet.

Heart's Desire Number: Also referred to as Motivation, Ambition, and Soul Urge Number, shows what is wished-for in life, and what is wanted in life. The Heart's desire Number presents your deepest most inner motives. This number is somewhat silent; however, when you learn to hear and identify it, you can catapult your self to extreme levels of success.

The numerology calculation is the same as the Destiny Number, however, it only uses the vowels A, E, I, O, U. Some numerologists incorporate the letter Y.

Vowels: I A U I O O 9 + 1 + 3 + 9 + 6 + 6 = 34 3 + 4 =7

Linda's Heart's Desire Number is 7

There you have the numerology calculations for the 4 fundamental numerological numbers. Keep in mind that looking at an individual number can prove useful; however, the power of numerology comes with looking at an total numerology chart and seeing how the numbers correlate, and how they can be embodied into your life.

My advice is just get going. Perform the numerology calculations on your own name and birth date. Do some exploration and discover what the numbers mean. Once you establish a basic awareness of numerology, develop it like any specialized skill and use it to change and heighten your life beyond anything you ever envisioned.

Finding out your numerology number is a very easy process, all you have to do is some additions and that's all. There are two ways to go about it, one- by adding the numbers of your birth date or two- by adding the numbers of your birth name. Let's take a quick look at how to do it:

Adding the numbers of your birth date:

Say for example your date of birth is 10th of April, 1980, then this is how you need to calculate your numerology number- 1+0 (day of birth)+4 (month of birth)+ 1+9+8+0 (year of birth)= 23. Next, this two digit number has to be made a single digit number, so what you have to do now is add 2 and 3, 2+3=5, therefore your numerology number is 5. But remember in case the result of your first addition would have been a figure like 39, then add 3 and 9, 3+9=12, now 12 needs to be broken down to 1+2=3, therefore the numerology number would be 3. Always remember the numerology numbers are from 1-9.

Adding the letters of your name:

Every letter has been allotted a number according to numerology, like-

So suppose your name is Edward, this is how you need to calculate- 5+4+5+1+9+4=28. Now break 28, 2+8=10. As I mentioned earlier the number has to be in single digit therefore it needs to be broken down again, 1+0=1. So, for Edward, his numerology number is 1.

One of the ways numerology helped me to find compatibility was to show me qualities I didn't know about myself and maybe couldn't see on my own. Some people are always called bossy or controlling, but the way that can ultimately work positively in your life is by assuming a job that needs someone as a leader. How that will work in a relationship successfully is to find somebody who would prefer to stay out of the spotlight yet still wishes to devote themselves in a way that is helpful and genuine. Numerology has a way of identifying the characteristics within a person and finding common features that will mix well together.

The Compatibility of Numerology

Understanding exactly how numerology can help you find your soul mate depends on how you choose to use the strengths of numerology. Numerology - Western Or Chaldean?

They are the ancient science of Chaldean Numerology based on the world's original root language Chaldean/Sumerian (4,000 BCE), and the Western (so-called Modern) Numerology based on the pre-Roman Empire Alphabet of 22 letters (500 BCE). Chinese Numerology

Although the exact origins of numerology are unknown, Chinese numerology is believed to be one of the earliest forms of numerology. It is thought that the origins of Chinese numerology date back nearly 4000 years to the banks of the Yellow River.

The tale that is told is that the first of the five mythical emperors of China, Wu of Hsai, was working on the banks of the Yellow River trying to find a method to prevent the floods that regularly devastated the communities located along the river. It was during the course of this work that Wu found a tortoise shell, which at the time was considered to be a very good omen.

This particular tortoise shell, however, was extremely rare, unique and special because it had fascinating markings on it. The shell showed a magic 3x3 square on its back that later became known as the Lo Shu Grid. The Lo Shu Grid was particularly remarkable because every row, column and diagonal on the grid add up to the number 15.

The number 15 was very significant because it is the number of days between the new moon and the full moon. Additionally, the number 5 was highly respected in ancient China, and was located in the important center square of the grid.

The Lo Shu Grid became the basis of Chinese numerology and is still used today in the Far East.

The grid took on a different adaptation in the West, and eventually over time Chinese numerology evolved into three different systems that are used today. There is the Western Version of Chinese Numerology, Traditional Chinese Numerology and the Ki system.

There is very little known about the origins of the Western version of Chinese numerology, although Hettie Templeton is credited with its popularization. Templeton taught classes and gave numerous public lectures and broadcasts throughout Australia during the 1930's and 40's. Her teachings helped Western Chinese Numerology gain the popularity it enjoys today, so most of the current information regarding this form of numerology comes from Australia and New Zealand.

The Western version of Chinese Numerology is by far the easiest of the three versions of Chinese Numerology to learn, and it is believed by many to be the most accurate. In fact, there are a large number of numerologists in China and Hong Kong who use the Western version rather than the traditional version of Chinese Numerology.

Chinese numerology uses only the numbers 1-9, and 0 is not included. Western Chinese numerology uses a square made up of 9 boxes - 3 down and 3 across. You can think of this square like a tic-tac-toe square or like a number sign (#) Each box in the square has a number from 1-9 associated with it. The boxes are numbered from 1-9 starting in the lower left square and moving up each column. So, from bottom to top in the first column would be 1,2,3, from bottom to top in the second column would be 4,5,6, and the last column from bottom to top would contain the numbers 7,8 and 9.

The numbers from a person's date of birth are then input into these boxes one at a time. So for instance, if someone was born in the year 1966, they would have one 1 in the bottom left box, one 9 in the top right box, and two 6's in the top middle box.

Depending upon how many of each number a person has in their grid, you can tell a lot about their strengths and weaknesses, their character traits and more.

Numerology - Analyzing the Many Different Names You and Other People Use

Numerology is the study of the symbolism of numbers. It is used to determine a person's personality, strengths and talents, obstacles to be overcome, inner needs, emotional reactions and ways of dealing with others. By applying simple mathematical formulas to the numbers representing a person's name and birth date, a numerologist can derive four major core elements and some twenty or thirty modifiers. A symbolic evaluation of these elements and modifiers provides a remarkably complete and accurate character analysis.

Since the birth date is fixed, the elements and modifiers related to the birth date don't change during a person's lifetime. On the other hand, names often undergo changes during one's life either by choice (Robert becomes Bob) or as a specific situation requires (marriage, in particular). When names change, there can frequently be substantial modifications made to a person's energies and personality.

You can use commonly available numerology software to analyze any name that a person now uses, has used or is thinking of using. You can analysis as many different names as you would like for comparison studies simply by running the appropriate numerology reports. (The same birth date is always used with the different names one is analyzing.) There are many different numerology programs to choose from today. Just Google "Numerology Software" and you will find both free and commercial programs. In general, the commercial programs will produce more complete and accurate reports.

The Importance of The Birth Name

A numerology report using the birth date and the birth name describes the person's basic traits as they would be seen at birth--and as they would be expected to grow and develop. The characteristics described are innate traits that would, in all probability, be present much of the life. Any obstacles described in this report are likely to be resolved, or, at the very least, partially resolved, as the person matures. Even though other names may be used as one gets older, the characteristics of the birth name are likely to be strongly felt throughout the life. In most instances, even when a person is born with a name which is changed shortly after birth, the traits described by that name still leave a heavy imprint.

How Peoples' Personalities Vary With Different Names

Most of us use names other than our birth name. We use middle initials, drop middle names, pick up nicknames used by friends or family. Sometimes, too, we use different names for our signature or change names by marriage or adoption. At any one time in our lives, the characteristics we exhibit would be a combination of the traits of all the names we are currently using plus the traits of our birth name.

A numerology report using the birth name describes your basic characteristics. Run another numerology report using the name you currently use rather than your birth name. Compare the energies in both reports.

Let's assume that both reports show your business skills. If your current name report shows more business facility than your birth name report, you can expect that you generally display added ability in that area. If, on the other hand, the current name report exhibits less facility in business matters, expect that your lowered facility will probably be apparent instead. In other areas--adaptability, ease of getting on with people, creativity, ease of expressing feelings, to name just a few--the characteristics of your birth name are likely to be modified so that they appear closer to the traits of your current name.

Suppose, however, that the current name report emphasizes a specific capability that is not even mentioned in the birth name report. The current name report may, for instance, show the potential for considerable organizational ability while the birth report has nothing at all to say about that kind of skill. The chances are good that you weren't born with any appreciable organizational ability. Since there was little there to begin with, it's unlikely that it'll be built up into anything of any consequence--irrespective of the possibilities mentioned in the current name report.

Why does it work that way? Let's look at a similar situation. If you were born with great talent as a painter, it's easy to see that you can develop that talent further. This is particularly so if your current name reemphasizes that talent. If, on the other hand, your birth report suggests little painting talent, it's hard to imagine that you're going to turn into another Leonardo da Vinci no matter what the current report says. (About 5% of the time, interestingly enough, people can exert the force of their will and manage to develop a skill that is not mentioned in the birth name report. Although they're not likely to become another Leonardo, they occasionally develop a talent much further than might be expected.)

It works the same way, of course, with other abilities, too. You can develop your basic talents, for sure, but you can only occasionally build up an ability when there is little or nothing there to begin with.

If you have several different current names--say, one that you use in business, another that you use with your family and still another with friends--run a numerology report for each name and than compare it with your birth report. Remember to always use the same birth date.

If you are trying to find a more optimum name, there are several things to keep in mind. First, choose a new name to best balance the energies already in your birth report. For example, if your 1, 4 or 8 (pragmatic) energies are too strong, you may be inflexible. By choosing a current name that de-emphasizes this energy, this trait can be brought into better balance. On the other hand, if you already have some business ability but it is not emphasized, you may want to choose a name that is stronger in this area.

Next, examine the modifiers. Whichever name--birth or current--that gives the more balanced use is the one that predominates.

Adopting Other Names Through Marriage

When you change your name by marriage, you can get some idea of how your life might change from the new name. Compare a report using your married name with another report using your current name. Compare both reports to your birth name report, too. If there are several possible marriage names, you may want to look at them all and pick the one that feels most comfortable.

Naming New-Born Children

You can get some idea of what children are going to be like by looking at their birth reports--even before they're born. Since you usually don't know the exact birth date in advance, some people run reports for several different possible birth dates. Some people even run several different names for each date to make sure they find the name they like the best. If you want even more information, you may want to compare a new born's birth report and current name report--one report using the name you'd expect on the birth certificate, the other using what you expect will be the current name.

Choosing Names for Businesses

You can also pick out names for businesses the same way you pick out names for people. Sometimes, too, if a business is just being started, you may have a choice of what date you decide to begin operations. You may want to run a number of numerology reports combining different birth dates with different business names so you can compare them. Hint: If the Life Path or Expression of a business turns out to be a number 1 or a number 8, the potential for money and success may be markedly increased.

The success of any business is dependent, of course, on more than the name of the business. It also depends, as you might expect, on the main people running the business.
