Astrology : A Science or Superstition?

Human beings have always been curious to know their future. Whenever someone is in difficulty and cannot easily come out of it, he wants to know whether the days of his misery will come to an end at all. And if yes, then when? When one invests a great deal of time, effort or money into some project, it is natural to wonder whether that investment will bear some fruit. There have always been people around who have successfully predicted future events. Their methods have been different - some people can simply look into the future, some use tarot cards, some draw up an astrological chart which we call horoscopes, some read the lines in the palms of people. One cannot deny that future has been accurately predicted many a times and by many a people. Each successful prediction proves that it is indeed possible to correctly predict future.

In the ancient times, astrologers were held to be in great esteem by the people. There was no difference between astronomers and astrologers. In fact, astronomy and Astrology were not considered to be two different subjects. Many will be surprised to know that most of the renowned scientists of the past, including Sir Isaac Newton, were astrologers too. In ancient India Astrology was known as "Jyotish Shastra" which included predictive Astrology as well as what we know as astronomy. Needless to say that the astrologers of that era were all great mathematicians too. An accomplished astrologer was called "Trikal-darshee" : one who could see past, present and future. It would perhaps not be an exaggeration to say that Astrology was considered to be the foremost branch of science.

Slowly over a period of time this subject came into disrepute.

How Astrology lost its exalted status?

It is a fact of life that people emulate successful, popular and respected persons. Seeing the social status enjoyed by astrologers, charlatans started masquerading as astrologers. They learnt a few tricks of the trade and started duping gullible people. It was and still is a very lucrative business. An astrologer earns money by making predictions while giving no guarantee that any of his predictions will turn out to be true. There is no money back guarantee :-). Once an astrologer sets up shop, people start coming to him in the hope that may be he will be able to foresee their future correctly. The astrologer is in a wonderful position. For example, he may make predictions about ten persons, getting only one prediction right. The nine persons, about whom he predicted wrongly, will never come back to him. But the tenth person, about which the astrologer was able to predict correctly, will not only come back to him again but also refer many other persons to him, citing personal experience. In this way, the business of an astrologer always flourishes, no matter how he himself fares in his trade. But the downside of this was that astrologers, as a group, started being seen as a lot of dubious persons like politicians of the modern age. Once such impression started gaining ground, Astrology as a subject no longer remained attractive to intelligent persons. People, who had talent, started to pursue other fields of knowledge. Over a period of time, the inevitable happened. No talent, worth its salt, chose to pursue Astrology as a vocation or a hobby and the outcome of this is for everyone to see in the present times.

There was one more very important reason for Astrology becoming one of the lesser fields of knowledge. It was the decline of India, the fountainhead of human civilization, and its loss of status as the repository of all the knowledge of the ancient world (see How India lost its Glory). The Islamic hordes, who attacked and looted India many a times and later ruled that country for hundred of years, had no respect for priceless works of art, the magnificent architecture and the other exalted areas of human endeavor. They destroyed most of the ancient temples, burnt down libraries like Nalanda and Takshshila and permanently took away innumerable books of infinite wisdom from the future generations of humanity. A great amount of recorded knowledge was lost, astrological books included. This loss proved to be irreparable, as the then Indian society became engaged in ensuring its survival and a constant struggle against the aggressors. The few people, who had some invaluable texts and scriptures with them, were hard put to preserve the remaining works of ancient sages. That is why, when one studies Astrology , he feels as if some vital links are missing. With the Hindu philosophy losing its ground it was natural that Astrology would lose its prominent place too. As the modern science developed and the scientific temperament gained ground, with the dearth of genuine astrologers, Astrology started fading into oblivion.

The criticism and The defense

Astrology is scoffed at by people for two main reasons. First, of course, is that the predictions made by astrologers often goes wrong. Secondly, if one takes his horoscope to different astrologers, they make different predictions. They even make different horoscopes given the same set of data regarding the birth of a person. These facts force people conclude that Astrology is not a science and that it is only a means to befool people for the astrologers' benefit.

One cannot deny that the reasons cited above are valid. Nonetheless, there is some element of prejudice against Astrology which also plays some part in the denigration of this science. Let us take an example to illustrate this point.

A man falls sick due to some disease. He goes to his neighborhood doctor. The doctor advises him to go for some tests. After seeing the results of those tests and considering the patient's symptoms, the doctor concludes that the man has contracted some particular disease say, Sickosis :-). He prescribes some medicines and the patient goes home in the hope of getting rid of the sickness as soon as possible. After taking the medicines for next two days, the patient finds that the medicines are not working the way they were supposed to work. He goes back to the doctor and the doctor changes the medicines and the person starts responding to the second set of medication immediately. Within a few days, the person is back to his old healthy self.

What would have happened if the person had not responded to that second set of medicines? Most probably he would have gone to another doctor. That doctor would have advised him to go for more tests, diagnosed his problem as per his own knowledge and experience and treated him accordingly. Again, there would have been the same probability of the patient getting rid of his disease.

So, in the end it boils down to problem of correct diagnosis. As soon as the disease is identified correctly, it can be treated successfully. The doctor's problem is to identify the disease correctly, given the symptoms and the results of the tests conducted. In fact, he guesses the disease based on the symptoms the patient displays and to confirm his suspicions the doctor asks the patient to undergo a particular set of tests. If the doctor's first guess is proved wrong, he suggests another set of tests to the patient aimed at confirming his second best guess of the disease.

There is one more element which may mar the chances of the patient getting better: the test results. If the lab conducting those tests makes a mistake, the doctor is bound to be misled by the results. It has also been observed many a times that even with the same symptoms and the same set of test results, different doctors may diagnose the problem differently.

The same thing, when happening in the context of Astrology , is proffered as a proof that it is not a science. When a doctor makes a mistake, his skills are blamed not the Medical Science. But if an astrologer fails, it is Astrology which is considered a pseudo-science. If doctors can arrive at different conclusions on the basis of same data, why astrologers should not be allowed to differ with each other. If you take the blood samples of the same patient to different labs, you are almost certain to find differences in their findings. If the machines built with all our scientific knowledge at our disposal make mistakes, no one denigrates modern science itself. But when it comes to Astrology, people are only too ready to dismiss it. Perhaps, by doing this, people want to prove that they have, what is called, scientific temperament.

Why Astrologers go wrong in their prediction?

Lack of knowledge: This is perhaps the foremost reason. Most of the astrologers, after learning a bit, find it difficult to resist the temptation to start making predictions. A certain percentage of their predictions do turn out to be true since they have learnt a little bit of Astrology after all. They cannot hold themselves back from showing off their half baked knowledge. Another reason if the temptation to start reaping, as soon as possible, the fruits of their efforts made in learning the subject. Once the customers start flocking to them, they lose the urge to keep learning further. Also, they are left with little spare time to make further efforts to learn more. They get too busy duping people.

Lack of Talent: In the modern times, since the pursuit of this subject is not considered very respectable, persons of genius do not take up the study of Astrology. They would rather prefer to become scientists, engineers, doctors, littérateurs, artists etc. This does not help the development of Astrology nor does it help add to the knowledge or find the missing links in this subject. Currently, there are no serious research projects related to this field. Thus this base of knowledge does not get updated.

Incorrect Data: As the very basis of Astrology is mathematical, the data such as time of birth etc. must be accurate. If this data is incorrect, the horoscope and consequently the interpretation of it is bound to be faulty. The position of cusps, house divisions, and the planetary positions at any given moment needs to be accurate too. The numerous ephemeris differ from each other so much that it seems incredible. One must follow the most accurate data (for example, from NASA) for calculations, in this age of science. Normally, astrologers tend to take the easy route, that of following some ready-reckoner sort of things, leading to inaccuracies in their calculations.

Destiny of the subject: It may so happen that the fate of the person who wants his future read, does not favor the person in knowing his future. This idea may seem far fetched but it is not. Even in modern times, with all the development of medical science, patients keep dying of fully treatable diseases. If a person is destined to die of pneumonia, he will in spite of the fact that millions of people around the world are successfully treated for it every year. If fate can play a role here why cannot it play the same role regarding Astrology.

The very nature of Future: Modern science divides the universe in two parts: known and the unknown. It is believed that whatever is unknown today, will become known tomorrow. Over a period of time, every thing will become known one day. But the enlightened sages have said that certain aspects of the existence is unknowable. These things do not belong in the domain of human knowledge. Certain aspects of future also belongs to the same domain.

Anyone, who will study Astrology with an open mind, cannot dismiss it as something without merit. It is an easy task for astrologers to correctly tell certain things about a man, such as his physical characteristics, diseases he is likely to get afflicted with, his temperament, his overall success in life in terms of money he earns or fame he achieves, the nature of his profession etc., simply by looking at his correctly drawn horoscope. It is in the matters of details and the timing of events that astrologers tend to go awry. What is needed is a fresh approach to the subject. Methods and Techniques of Medical Astrology

Medical astrology is the branch of astrology that deals with the possible and actual health and diseases of the client. Usually, people come to the astrologer in times of great life changes, such as

Should I change my job?

When will I come into my inheritance?

Should I marry him/her? etc

To the medical astrologer, however, people come in the progressed stages of the illness, often after some kind of surgery has already taken place, along with a rich history of dealing with doctors. The usual questions for the medical astrologer are:

Should I go for surgery?

Does it have to be a surgery?

When should the surgery take place?

Why don't we have children?

Do I have cancer?

Will my cancer come to pass this year? etc

If the events in the history of illness coincide with certain astrological transits and configurations, we can find the astrological reason for illness, give the prognosis for the course and duration of the illness, and decide upon a therapy needed and so on. The opposite situation often takes place as well: the client comes for the usual astrological session, but the astrologer sees in the horoscope a danger long before the illness has manifested and materialized.

A great deal of expectations is attached to the advice the medical astrologer gives. Will there be a surgery or not, to go for chemotherapy or not, for a radiology therapy or not...

"On Tuesday, I have a radiology therapy appointment, should I go?"

"The doctor recommended taking my bladder away to stop the cancer from spreading, should I do that or not?"

Medical astrology is the cruelest branch of astrology. If you cannot bear meeting with tough, terminal pathologies, if you do not want to take lethal responsibility for the consequences of you advice -- you better don't do it. If you are not a medical doctor by profession, you will have to prepare well and read literature, consult medical doctors, gather information from the Internet, take part in forums, groups, membership sites etc.

The problems of curing are drastically different to what astrologers usually do during the reading. In an ideal world, astrologers advise and clients change their behavior, in order to spend the surplus energy the planets and stars send them. Medical astrologer may be more concrete and suggest wearing certain crystals, colours, aromatherapy, flower remedies and so on. It is best that the professions of medical astrologer and medical doctor do not mix. Ideally, medical astrologer does not cure and the client is not the patient, unless the medical astrologer is medical doctor as well, or eventually, a qualified homeopath. Neither should medical astrologer be a healer: he or she should only give a highly qualified prognosis of malefic influences that have already manifested as a disease and will -- unless nothing is undertaken -- continue to manifest thus, probably with heavier consequences as the time progresses.

Medical astrologer reaches out for all astrological techniques and methods from which something can be deduced about the nature of illness. He or she must be, above all, a competent astrologer, must command a wide array of astrological techniques and use them for the benefit of the client and their health. Since he or she gives advice about healing, but cannot heal on his own, in an ideal world, he or she should be connected to doctors and healers, should know their natal charts and through synastry decide whom the patient should see next. However, for practical reasons, it is best that the client finds his or her own doctors and healers to go after visiting the astrologer, otherwise, in case something goes wrong (and with ill people it always will), the astrologer can be accused of having a deal with the health practitioner that he has sent the client to.

From the chart, it is possible to decide upon the kind of therapy, such as homeopathy, Bach flower remedies, vibropathy, massage, classical medicine, attending spas, aromatherapy, crystal healing, Su Jok, etc.

The Signs

Signs represent the twelve large systems in the body of man, starting with Aries which represents the head, all through the sign of Pisces, ruling the feet. The signs that contain the planets, either by birth or through progressed horoscopes, will stand out, or will most probably be the sources of illness. For each sign a special tissue salt exists; these are the building materials for human body, the substances through the combination of which tissues, organs, systems of organs, and finally the entire body are built. Using these salts on their own or by combining them in material or homeopathic doses, one's health can be much improved.

Quite similarly, for each sign a special type of food is best. Medical astrologer will be qualified to give advice about food, and this will also improve the client's health in numerous ways. Using the theory of doctrines, i.e. finding the similarities between the zodiac, body, and herbs, it is also possible to connect signs with herbs and prescribe them to help the patient.

Degrees of the Horoscope in Medical Astrology

Each sign has 30 degrees, and each of these 360 degrees is connected to one part of the body. The planet on that degree is a predisposition for an illness -- the degree tells us which part of the body is in question, while the planet will show what kind of disease it will be. In a similar manner, it is possible to connect the midpoints and the degrees.

The Planets, Asteroids, and the Uranian Planets in Medical Astrology

The planets are sources of energy in the horoscope, and each is unique. For instance, the energy of Mars is fire-like; he flames up the fires in the body (resulting in high temperature) and cleanses it thus. Neptune stands for bacteria that are known to the medicine, while Pluto is for the unknown bacteria, and so on. The asteroids, the large ones in particular, such as Ceres, Juno and others, behave in a similar way. In medical astrology, the Uranian planets can also be used. There are eight "Uranian" planets which have no astronomical data, but the influence of which can be felt quite strongly in the chart. Some of these planets have strong medical connotations, so using them can increase the credibility of medical astrology analysis up to 90% of success.

The Houses in Medical Astrology

Out of the twelve houses in the usual astrology, five are more significant that the others:

First house -- the physical body,

Sixth house -- diseases,

Eighth house -- support from others, sex, death, karma, terminal states, cancer,

Twelfth house -- isolation, hospitals and monasteries, psychic problems, auto-immunity.

However, every house has its own special meaning in medical astrology:

No. 1 -- face, consciousness, brain tumors, brain insults, etc

No. 2 -- blood, electrolytes, hormones, food intake, hypophysis, diabetes.

No. 3 -- the lungs, speech problems,

No. 4 -- producing food for others, mother, milk; genetics, inheritance,

No. 5 -- heart, infarction of myocardium,

No. 6 -- diseases, personal hygiene, meals, day to day habits,

No. 7 -- death through brain problems, balance of the body, spine,

No. 8 -- Expelling of the processed foods, hypophysis, adrenal cortex, kidneys,

No. 9 -- the upper part of brain, cerebral hemisphere, Jupiter rules over the left, Neptune rules over the right hemisphere;

No. 10 -- metabolism,

No. 11 -- circulation, hemorrhagia,

No. 12 -- autoimmune diseases, thymus, immunity in general, liver.

The ruler of the house is the main indicator of the events related to the house, while the planets in the house are not so important. For instance, to see what kinds of illnesses one can have, take a look at the sixth house and its ruler, its position, aspects and transits. Only after the ruler remained under pressure for a long time, we could be allowed to start predicting the existence of a disease.

Planetary Aspects

How will a planet express its energies primarily depends on its relations with other planets, which boils down to the angle that those two planets make with the centre of the circle. Each pair of planets brings its own kind of sickness, for instance, a combination of Sun and Saturn will slow down the metabolism, while the Sun and Mars make it easy for the person to burn his or her own energy -- such persons often go in for sports.

The angle of 150 degrees (inconjunction) is especially malefic. Whenever there is an exact inconjunction between two planets in the chart, the person will have to live through various troubles of medical nature. Malefic aspects from malefic planets to the Moon are the worst. Squares are extremely malefic, so Saturn squaring the Moon gives a predisposition towards cancer, although the same effect may be seen from malefic aspects from Neptune and/or Pluto to the Moon. Just as in other branches of astrology, malefic aspects produce action -- an illness of a kind. But, it always pays to see where the good aspects are, because they bring amelioration, often a complete cure -- sometimes through remedies, sometimes through persons that resemble the description of the aspect (for instance, a trine to Neptune -- healing through an apothecary etc.)

If there are no beneficial aspects to the rulers of the 6th, 8th and/or 12th houses, then we should find persons whose planets create harmonious aspects. If that person is the doctor or a healer, healing will be successful.

Midpoints in Medical Astrology

Each planet is on the middle distance of another two planets, as if in a triple conjunction. For every midpoint there is a special medical delineation: the midpoint of Jupiter and Saturn denotes liver, while MA/SA (the midpoint for Mars and Saturn) denotes spasms, in more involved cases even death. Midpoints make each chart as unique as possible and you cannot do medical astrology well if you are not using them. For even greater precision, include the Uranian planets and their midpoints, especially in progressed charts.

Medical Aphorisms

Medical aphorisms are configurations typical for specific diseases and states. For instance, Mars on 29 Scorpio near the Ascendent will give a predisposition towards bronchitis, as will any squared malefic in Gemini, as will Saturn on the Ascendent in a mutable sign... and there may be more such combinations, for any given illness. The medical astrologer must be very well acquainted with such configurations and should be able to recognize them in the chart. However, the clients won't hold it against you if the middle of the session you look up at the manual -- they won't care if it helps them get cured!

In these modern times, it is possible to have astrology software compute medical configurations in the natal chart. To be more precise, without such a piece of software, it would be very difficult to do medical astrology, because there are hundreds of such configurations.

Diagnosing an Illness Based on the Natal Chart

Every chart contains dozens of potentially problematic configurations. It does not mean that that person must be ill just because such configurations exist in the chart, neither will it mean that the person will have all those illnesses at once, neither will it mean that all possibilities for illnesses in the chart must become reality. Configuration is a predisposition for illness, and it will manifest itself only when at least three predispositions are active at the same time. For instance, a square between the Moon and Saturn is the most frequent natal predisposition for cancer. The second predisposition may then come every seven years, since it takes seven years for the progressed Moon to make another malefic aspect to the natal Saturn. The third factor may come into play through a solar chart, in which there may be, say, an in conjunction between the Moon and Saturn. Or the third factor may come through a slow transit of Saturn, perhaps through its stationary point squaring the natal Moon. If there are four such factors at one and the same period of time, the client will feel as if surrounded by evil and wherever they turn to, the situation looks hopeless to them.

Only when we see such a concentration of approximately identical transits, may we want to warn the client about cancer or some other such grave illness. Since we can compute the transits and solar charts in advance, we can exactly tell the client when his or her troubles will begin, as well as when will they end.

Sometimes, an identical predisposition will appear from different configurations. If there is a square of Uranus to the Ascendent, but that same Ascendent is also squared by Pluto, the combination for surgery will appear twice. Now it only takes a transit of Mars to empower one of those configurations, or for Mars to be on the Uranus/Pluto midpoint in the solar return chart and the surgery seems unavoidable.

Diagnosing an Illness Based on Transits, Progressions, Solar and Synastry Charts

In natal astrology, in 90% of sessions we will need nothing more than the natal chart and the transits -- in one-on-one sessions there simply isn't time to dive into all the charts that can be useful. In medical astrology, however, it is a routine to use many other types of charts. There must be three independent confirmations for illness to appear, regardless in which chart do we see it. Looking for clues in the chart in case of medical astrology often is a detective-like work, until you find the constellation which was active when the symptoms first started. Once you connect real-life events with their possible astrological causes, you can predict how the illness will unfold, and with confidence.

Long transits of malefic planets produce all kinds of health problems, while the progressive horoscope produces the best long-term view of the client's life. In medical astrology, we always use solar charts, because there we see strong accents, which may not endure for long, but which sometimes leave the sequel for the rest of the client's life.

It also matters whom do you live with. The persons the client lives with and exchanges his or her energy with them. Sometimes they heal just by being present, in other times they make the client only sicker. The country in which the client lives will also have its own horoscope and that can be taken into account too.

Auxiliary Methods in Medical Astrology

Arabian Parts are formed by adding two important points, from which another, the third point, is subtracted. There are about 500 Arabian Parts, and some of them are directly related to health. Pars Fortunae is the most well known Arabian Part, and it combines influences of the Sun, Moon and Ascendent.

Each particular house has its own set of Arabian Parts. For instance, the sixth house has the following two Arabian Parts, which are of interest in medical astrology:

Incurable diseases, bad fortune and vice (Asc + Mars - Saturn),

Curable diseases (Asc + Mars - Mercur),

The sixth house also contains the parts for servants, the prisoners of war, and the pars of the defeated, which have nothing to do with health.

The number of Arabian Parts per house varies: house No. 7 has 16 Arabian Parts, house No. 8 -- 5 Parts and so on.

Quite often, horary astrology will yield loads of info. Instead of natal charts and the charts that are derived from it, in horary astrology we erect the chart for the time of asking the question about the illness. Reading a horary chart is different to the reading of the natal and all other charts, so don't use this technique unless you know what you are doing. Nevertheless, it pays to learn horary astrology, because it often gives a direct glimpse into the real situation, the course of the illness, eventual surgeries and deaths etc.

The decumbiture chart is the chart for the beginning of an illness. We should make it only if we know for certain when the illness begun. Also has rules of its own.

Electional astrology tries to discover when an action should begin. In medical astrology, such charts could be studied to discover when the prescribed therapy should start, when is the time for doctor to visit the patient and so on.

The Role of Medical Astrology in Healing

Modern medicine knows a lot about the state of the patient in the moment of measurement, and knows also, in a statistical manner, whether the prognosis is good or bad. Nevertheless, it never deals with the future of the patient, and is almost always used when something bad has already happened. Medical astrology is the missing link between the recorded state of the patient, his or her current therapy and the future development of the illness. Since it is possible to make the astrological prognosis in advance, it becomes possible to do something in advance as well. Homeopathy and other energy healing systems are a natural continuation of medical astrology, because energy healing "spends" the unwanted but present energy that planets and stars send us via astral body. The biggest advantage of medical astrology is that it enables not only to predict which techniques and remedies can heal now, but when these techniques and remedies should be stopped, and some other healing modality be taken and applied instead.

Astrology is the study of the relationship between the relative positions of certain celestial bodies and life here on earth. Because the word astrology comes from the Greek words astron, meaning 'star' and logos, meaning 'word', we can literally translate astrology to mean the language of the stars; a language and practice that has developed over thousands of years by numerous cultures around the world since its earliest recorded beginnings in the third millennium BC.

Indian or Jyotish The foundation of Jyotisha is based on the Sanskrit bandhu of the Vedas which describes the binding between the inner and outer world. As with Western Astrology, Jyotisha relies on the connection between the microcosm and the macrocosm. The microcosm is life on earth, while the macrocosm is the universe.

The History of Astrology

Although the terms astrology and astronomy have long been synonymous with each other, astrology actually predates both astronomy and psychology. The earliest known astrological records can be traced to Babylon as far back as 1645 BC. However, the history of astrology doesn't follow one particular timeline, but rather three independent branches we refer to as Western astrology, Indian or Jyotish astrology and Chinese or East Asian astrology.

Chinese

Like Western and Indian Astrology, Chinese astrology is believed to have originated in China in the third millennium. Similar to Hermetic law, "as above, so below", Confucius said, "Heaven sends down its good or evil symbols and wise men act accordingly." Astrology in China later became combined with the Chinese practice known as Feng shui.

Western

The study of Western astrology was believed to be first practiced among the ancient Babylonians in the third millennium B.C.. Babylonians believed that the Gods were responsible for all atmospheric phenomena, such as rain and sunshine. Egypt also has a very important place in astrological history. Star charts dating back to 4,200 B.C. prove Egypt has an ancient history with astrology. Even the pyramids are oriented towards the North Pole of the sky as they served as astrological calculators, as well as burial places for astrologically minded pharaohs. In fact, Rameses II is often credited with fixing the positions of the cardinal signs Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn. Some zodiac signs are even said to be Egyptian in origin, including Aries, and Leo.

As Europeans became more literate, various periodicals and almanacs began publishing astrological information. Notable authors included Galileo and Copernicus, who were both practicing astrologers and founders of the modern scientific movement. However, the more popular astrology became, the more scrutinized it was. And when major astrological predictions failed to come true, astrology began to fall out of favor.

It wasn't until much later with the birth of Princess Margaret in 1930 that Astrology experienced a revival. To commemorate her birth, the British newspaper, London Sunday Express, ran the princess' astrological profile, thus giving birth to the modern newspaper horoscope column.

Horoscopic

Developed in Hellenistic Egypt, Horoscopic Astrology uses a visual representation of the heavens called a horoscope, derived from the Greek word, horoskopos, meaning "a look at the hours". This visual representation usually takes the form of a chart or diagram (below) that represents the positions of the Sun, Moon, planets, the astrological aspects, and angles at the time of a particular event, such as a person's birth.

Horoscopic Astrology is divided into the four main branches of Natal, Mundane, Electional and Horary.

1. Natal Astrology is the most commonly practiced form of Horoscopic Astrology and is based upon the idea that each individual's personality or path in life can be determined by constructing a natal chart for the exact date, time, and location of a person's birth.

2. Mundane Astrology is one of the most ancient forms of astrology and takes its name from the Roman word Mundus, meaning "the World". Mundane Astrology is based upon the idea that a correlation exists between individuals and world events, world affairs (wars, assassinations, etc.) and even geological phenomena such as earthquakes.

3. Electional Astrology is the practice of determining an individual's astrological profile to determine how and when he or she should partake in a particular undertaking or event such as opening a business.

4. Horary astrology is the practice in which the astrologer attempts to answer an individual's specific question by constructing a horoscope centered on that specific question. For example, "Am I going to get a promotion at work?"

Helpful Advice On How To Learn Astrology

The best way to learn astrology is to study current astrological placements of the planets and understand the correlation between the symbolic representations of the planetary patterns and the political, environmental and social occurrences in the world.

Astrology tip number one: Follow current events.

By following current astrological movements and changes you will get a feel for the different positions of the planets and understand the different ways these configurations manifest. For example currently there is a powerful configuration that represents revolutionary ideas and uprisings. When the planets aligned and shifted to these positions the protest in the Middle East began. When you study astrology by following current positions of the planets not only will you be able to predict or understand world events you will be able to interpret how those planetary patterns play out in personal astrology charts.

Astrology tip number two. Understand and follow transits to your astrology chart.

In addition to following current astrological movements of the planets it is very important to follow the astrological energies in relationship to your personal chart. When a planet at a current position in the sky is making a mathematical angle to the natal position of a planet in your astrology chart then your personal planet is under an astrology transit. For example if you were born with your Sun in Aries and Uranus in Aries is at the same degree as your Sun then you are under a Uranus transit to your Sun. Specifically Uranus conjunct your Sun. This would indicate a time in your life for your own personal "revolution" of change.

Astrology tip number three: Find a good astrology course or astrology workshop.

There are many ways to study astrology yet it can be very complex and confusing if you do not have a system that allows you to learn astrology easily and effortlessly. Although as in any new teachings acquiring knowledge takes some effort however the best way is to learn from a seasoned astrologer who makes complicated concepts understandable. Find an astrology course that is designed around current astrology principles and how the astrological influences affect your astrology chart. Search for an astrologer who you like and an astrology teacher that has experience. Of course you can learn from someone that you don't like but why? It is better not to have a personality barrier between you and the subject you are learning.

Astrology tip number four:

Write your life story. Arguably the best way to learn astrology is to create an autobiography of events that happened in your life. Take your time to really recall important moments and all memories that you can. Such as the first time you fell in love, graduating college, your first job, all significant job changes, getting married, having kids, getting divorced, great or tragic love affairs, moving, traveling. Write down the dates of these events. Then you will do detective astrology work by finding out what were the transits, or planetary influences that were happening at those times.

Astrology tip number five: Go to astrology conferences.

There is nothing like going to astrology conferences to get a taste of the complexity and diversity that astrology offers. Look for regional and national conferences offered throughout the country, or if you have a strong Jupiter, investigate the astrology conferences throughout the world, why not? It is fun to study astrology with like-minded astrologers that you will meet at the astrology conferences. In addition to astrology lectures many conferences offer pre and post conference astrology workshops.

Astrology is a fascinating discipline and can be overwhelming when you first begin to learn astrology.
