The oil industry is booming right now, with many offshore oil rig jobs needed to crew the new drilling rigs. Top economists project the oil boom to last the next 14 to 20 years, which will likely lead to oil jobs outstripping financial and IT jobs. While many people are puzzled about how to get started, the truth is that if you are young, fit, hardworking and willing to get your hands dirty, you should have no trouble getting started.

If you do not have any experience, the best way to get started is to get a job on a land-based oil rig. You can get hired as a roustabout, basically a general laborer, work hard for 6 months and climb up the ladder to the position of roughneck. As a roughneck, you will still do a lot of manual labor, but you may also have a chance to supervise a few roustabouts and help out the more specialized positions like the derrickhands and drillers. Show the right attitude, work hard and you may find yourself promoted all the way up to driller (2nd highest rank on the oil rig) in 5 years.

A university degree is not very useful on board an oil rig. On the other hand, a useful technical certificate or diploma, for example as an electrician or mechanic, could land you a job in the motor room or electrical department. These are not the only useful trade skills on board an offshore oil rig. The rig crew need to eat, so a good cook is always welcome on board. A medic also plays a valuable part on the rig. Despite modern technology, an oil rig job is still a pretty hazardous place to work in. Accidents happen, and a medic always has work to do.

An important point to keep in mind is that an offshore oil rig is covered under maritime law. Hence, it is good if you take the trouble to get a basic working knowledge of how it will affect you. Besides this, there are vaccinations and skills certifications specific to where the oil rig is located. For example, in the UK you need to take an offshore survival and firefighting course. Different Canadian provinces have their own First Aid certifications. And different US states have their own requirements.

As you can see, there is no secret to getting started in offshore oil rig jobs. Just start small, on shore, from the bottom. Once you prove yourself, you can move to the more lucrative offshore drilling rigs.

Are you looking for oil drilling rig jobs? If not, why not? Men who are too old or aren't tough enough to work in the offshore oil industry have a valid excuse. But if you have the physical strength and the guts, why settle for a low-paying job at Walmart or McDonald's? When you work on an offshore oil rig, the work is tough and grueling, the hours are long and hard, the weather can get pretty extreme, and things can get very hairy sometimes. On the other hand, that's why oil workers often work only two weeks out of every month, and even entry level roustabouts can earn $45,000 every year. This is the main reason why you should look for no experience offshore oil rig jobs - the high salary and good benefits.

Offshore drilling companies pay their workers well. An experienced roustabout with 10 to 20 years under his belt can easily earn $55,000 a year, especially in a unionized job. The high pay is a must - turnover is just too high. Every year many new hires find that the working conditions are too tough and leave for easier jobs on land. The high salaries help to attract new workers to the oil rigs.

Old oil fields on land, like in South Texas, are drying up and reluctant to hire more workers. But the easy, cheap to pump oil is gradually running out. New oil fields are found in increasingly more hostile environments - offshore in the deep oceans, or freezing places like Alaska and Northern Canada. As long as you are willing to go where the jobs are, getting hired for well-paid oil drilling rig jobs is not a real problem. Many jobless oil workers remain jobless because they have bought a house somewhere, have a wife and children and do not want to move. A single, young man does not face the same problems.

Doing hard labor as a roustabout is not for everyone. But even unskilled workers like stewards (who work indoors) earn nearly as much as roustabouts. Those with more specific specialized or trade skills do even better. An oil rig mechanic or electrician can earn $55,000 to $65,000 a year. A good cook makes nearly $60,000, comparable to a executive chef in a catering company. Rig welders and scaffolders on offshore oil platforms have little trouble making $60,000 a year, double what they would earn at a construction site on land. With the right engineering degree, you could make $80,000 offshore.

And unlike politicians and used car salesmen, you can wake up every morning and face yourself in the mirror without feeling ashamed. Oil drilling rig jobs pay well and offer excellent benefits even for no experience offshore oil rig jobs. With a few years under your belt, things get even better.

Offshore oil rig jobs are both physically demanding and challenging. Because of the sometimes extreme conditions that rig workers operate under, the oil rig companies make the living conditions as comfortable as possible. You can expect your quarters to be of the highest standard and all your food and board costs to be covered. In addition to this your travel expenses are also covered by the company. There is a large variety of jobs offshore on offer including both entry level as well as senior positions. This is an industry that promotes from within, so starting at the bottom and working through the ranks is considered normal.

Hours Worked and Off Time

The working hours may seem long with shifts of 12 hours being considered the norm, but it is also very common for most of the oil rig positions to work on a rotation basis with more time off than on. Many of the employees will experience a fourteen days on to twenty one days off rotation. Other positions will require working longer durations with less time off, but generally you can expect to have at least half your year off.

Entry Level Positions

The variety of entry level oil rig work that does not require any previous rig experience includes Roustabouts, Assistant Roustabouts, Painters, Materials man or woman, Medics and Scaffolders. The position of radio controller as well as some of the positions within the catering crew are also considered new start positions. You could also start your career onboard as a Mudman or a Welder and there are always new positions arising as the Safety Man.

With regards to the position where it is advisable to have worked on a rig before, there are various crews that include drilling crew, deck crew and engineering, mechanical and subsea crews. With such a huge variety in work requirements, there is a lot of scope for advancement.

Salary Expectations

The starting salary for a Roustabout or Assistant Roustabout is in the region of $300 a day. While this is not an extremely high pay for the physical challenges that the position entails, it is a very good salary for what is often referred to as unskilled labour. Many Roustabouts advance to the position of Roughneck within just a few short years and can then specialise in fields that pay substantially more. The position of Driller can expect to be paid up to $100,000 and professionals with relevant qualifications can earn anywhere up to $250,000.

Less Physical Rigging Jobs

For those interested in offshore oil rig work but are interested in a less physical position, you could consider working in the kitchens as part of the catering crew. The position of steward or stewardess is considered one of the less physical position onboard and requires no previous experience. You will be required to serve food, assist in the kitchen and also deal with laundry. Cooks and Kitchen bosses will require previous experience in food preparation with certification, but don't require previous oil rig work experience. The catering crew are also treated well by the other members of the crew as food is a very important aspect of living offshore.

Health and Safety

Safety and health are also very important and first aid training is provided to all crew on a regular basis. The offshore medic will be required to deal with a huge variety of different situations due to limited access to other medical assistance. There are always qualified first aiders onboard who will assist when required and are generally members of other crews. Throughout your employment offshore, you will have to remember the importance of the work environment and safety is the most important aspect. All crew are trained on equipment checking procedures and knowing which equipment is tested and ready for use.

While working offshore is challenging and is considered to be a dangerous profession, the rewards are in line with those dangers. Offshore oil rig jobs are sought after because of the high pay and extended off-time. Many of the crew instant that landing their first rigging jobs required knowing the recruitment strategies and getting their application in front of the right people. Once you have established yourself in the industry, you can advance quickly and earn a substantial amount of money with few qualifications.

How to get Started

Offshore oil rig work is lucrative an challenging. As with many industries, it is not always easy to get your foot in the door. Understanding and being guided through the specific recruitment strategies will help you to achieve your aim of getting employed quickly.

Offshore oil rig jobs are hot right now, due in part to oil prices shooting up from $80 per barrel to $100 to $130 and above. Every Tom, Dick and Harry is applying for offshore oil rig jobs and competing with you for a job on an oil rig. To beat them out, you need to do everything they do and more. Here are just 3 tips for you to do, above and beyond what everyone else commonly does.

1) Look for vacancies where most of your rivals fail to see. This is what most job seekers do: They look at the web-sites of the major oil companies, search on the online job boards like Monster and they look at national and local newspaper advertisements. However, a slowly growing number of job seekers are also looking for jobs through the internet. They are patiently searching Google, Yahoo and MSN - using phrases like "oil rig jobs" and "oil drilling companies". These canny job hunters are looking for job openings which have not been publicly advertised yet. Jobs which have just become available but are still slowly making their labyrinthine way through the depths of Human Resources. However, the internet is not the only place you can find oil company information. Why not look at the stock market? The Wilshire index lists the 5000 largest US companies. Some of them are certainly oil companies.

2) Do some detective work - find another way past HR. Do not immediately and blindly send out your job application. Do what the best salesmen and stock brokers do to scout out their best deals: Find the address of the oil company and stake it out. Where do their employees eat? Make friends with them. Find out how things really are in the company. Who are the decision makers? What are they like? You do not need to stalk the boss of the company, but maybe you can make some useful contacts who would be willing to recommend you, letting you bypass some of the bureaucratic bullshit. They do you a favour, you do them a favour. After all, it is common practice for many companies in hot sectors give their employees headhunting bonuses for finding new employees.

3) Get all your paperwork done ahead of time. Offshore oil rigs are covered under maritime law. Make sure you have some basic understanding of how this affects you. Additionally, there are often a number of certifications required before you are allowed to work. Depending on where the rig is, you may need some specialized first aid certifications (for example, Canada has state-specific first aid licenses you need to pass). Some jobs also need you to have an Offshore Survival Certificate and probably a Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) Certificate along with it. And do not forget your vaccinations. Some sites make this a requirement. Basically, find out if you need to meet all these extra requirements. Try to achieve them before you send off your job application. Or at the very least, get started on any required courses, and clearly mention that in your job application (as well as both your cover letter and resume).

Getting hired for offshore oil rig jobs is all about speed. How quickly can you short-circuit the usual job hunting and recruitment process? That is how quickly you will get yourself on board an oil rig.

Offshore oil rig jobs, unlike IT and finance, will be hot this coming decade. Sure, some oil drilling companies say they are idling their oil rigs and laying off workers, but this is offset by other companies hiring workers to man their new offshore oil rigs. What is the difference between these companies? Basically, most of the companies announcing lay-offs are publicly-listed companies - announcing lay-offs is a classic technique to keep their share prices from sinking too much. Privately-held companies, on the other hand, use recessions as an opportunity to leap-frog ahead of their competition. This is the kind of strategy which conservative investors like Warren Buffet use to make themselves billionaires. This is why there are still oil rig jobs available, if you only know where to look.

When we talk about the oil and gas industry, we can divide it into three different fields:

Upstream - exploring and drilling for oil
Midstream - refine and transport the oil
Downstream - sell and distribute the oil

Upstream has the greatest need for skilled workers. In their April meeting in 2008, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists reported that graduate students (with Masters degrees and PhD degrees) were being hired with starting salaries from $80,000 to $110,000. Why? Because many oil fields today are growing old and production is past its peak. Oil companies need to find new oil fields fast, and they need younger geologists to replace their retiring geologists, many of whom were hired in the 1970s. In the long run, demand for geologists with the training to prospect for oil will remain high - after all, out of 20,000 geology undergraduates, only 2,800 pass their Bachelor's degree at the end of four years of study. Given this report by the American Geological Institute, it is still worthwhile to study Geology in university if you have the brains for it.

If you are less academically inclined and prefer a more rugged lifestyle, you may want to start out as a roustabout. This is a good time for disadvantaged youths - the US Department of Labor has a JobCorp program where they work with colleges and industry to provide relevant job training. Officially, a roustabout is a laborer - but who cares? You can earn up to $45,000 a year, working just 6 months every year. With two decades experience, your salary goes up to $55,000. Compare this to a construction laborer's salary - $24,000.

Another good choice is to get in with a trade or craft. An oil rig welder with the relevant certifications can make up to $62,000 a year. An offshore oil rig also needs mechanics, electricians, cooks and nurses, so these are also good qualifications to earn. The great advantage of these support positions is that you can take your skills elsewhere if the oil industry ever goes into a real slump.

There are many entry-level offshore oil rig jobs which do not need a degree. You can get in as a roustabout or a tradesman like an electrician or mechanic.

Offshore oil rig jobs are the hot new jobs for this coming decade, bumping IT and finance from their perch. These are some of the jobs in the upstream oil industry, where you look for oil and drill for it. Then there is the midstream, where you refine and transport the oil. Finally, there are the downstream oil jobs, where you sell and distribute the finished product.

Upstream is where both the greatest demand and the greatest competition lies. Most of these jobs are international and require a lot of travel. Employees here often work in Alaska, the Arctic, Canada and the Middle East. The people on the really sharp end are the geologists who look for oil and the people who support them, doing seismic testing and test drilling. Should you try to get in here? This is a judgment call. If you started a university degree with the related qualifications 2 to 5 years ago, you would be in a very good position. Many of the oil company staff here would be in their 50s and 60s, some of them recalled from retirement. If you start today, you'll get your degree in 3 to 5 years time. Demand for a geologist would probably not be as strong. If you have started your geology degree, this is a good time to get the specializations you need to branch into this line of work.

A better choice for someone starting out is to get an offshore oil rig job as a roughneck or roustabout. While you are technically a laborer, your salary is better than many managers (unless they work for a tobacco company). Let your high school peers enjoy their better-sounding titles. You get to laugh all the way to the bank. In addition, if you show the right attitude and skills, you can work your way up the hierarchy from roustabout all the way up to derrickman, driller and oil rig manager. Whether or not you make it to oil rig manager, do remember history. Oil prices will eventually drop again after about 1 decade. Save some of your salary and use it to build your nest egg. Don't blow all your salary on beer and cigarettes and living the high life. Make sure you can retire when the oil boom ends.

Another good choice is to get a good trade skill like electrician, mechanic, medic or cook. These are some of the support positions also needed on an oil rig. You don't get labeled as a laborer, but you still get a good salary and excellent benefits. For spending 6 months every year in the middle of nowhere, you get more pay than your peer working on land. It is still a pretty good deal. In addition, when the oil market bubble bursts again, you have your trade skills to get by.

Even without the specialized skills of the driller, you can still get an offshore oil rig job. You can work your way up from roustabout, or you can get in through a tradeskill in a support position.

Many people find that working on an offshore oil rig is an exciting job. There are many positions needed in the petroleum industry, and not all of them require college degrees. If you are interested in engineering jobs, then you will need a Master's or a Ph.D. in order to be hired. Let's say you are in great physical condition and are looking for an exciting job, then you should look into being hired as a roughneck or roustabout position on offshore oil rigs.

The lowest position is that of a Roustabout. As a Roustabout, you will have some drilling activities on the oil rig, but you will also be assigned the job of unloading supplies. It is a dirty job and hard work, but you will be paid approximately $30,000 a year. Once you have experience as a roustabout you can be promoted to a roughneck. As Roughneck, you will report directly to a Driller and you will be instructed by the Driller to carry out the drilling on the oil rig. There is a lot of co-ordination that must go on between the members of the oil rig team and you have to be in excellent physical condition because drilling is hard work. The pay is approximately $38,000 a year.

The position of Driller is a supervisory one. You will supervise the Roughnecks and Roustabouts to ensure the crew is operating efficiently, but you will also operating the drilling and hoisting equipment and monitoring the gauges on the driller's console. This is an important job because understanding the readings on the gauges will allow you to make the necessary changes needed to manage the oil rig production.

As a supervisor it is your responsibility to ensure that the workers are following company and safety procedures. It is imperative that employees wear the appropriate work clothes for their safety. You must meet regularly with the crew to discuss safety issues and conduct safety drills. You will train new recruits and assign them to a seasoned worker for in-depth training.

A Driller is also responsible for checking all of the equipment to ensure it is in good working order. All equipment checks must be logged and filed for safety audits. You will be testing the crew's understanding of all safety guidelines, policies and procedures. This demanding job requires an eye for detail and excellent communication and organizational skills. Starting pay usually begins at $47,000 a year.

Other benefits you typically receive for working on an oil rig is free medical insurance. Your airfare is paid to get you to your offshore oil rig job. Most oil rig jobs will include providing you with living quarters and meals. By no means should you expect luxury accommodations, but you will find it offers you a clean place to eat and sleep. There isn't a whole lot of privacy on oil rigs. The living quarters are similar to living in dorm rooms. The people who sign on for these types of positions are open to the exciting adventure that awaits them.

In the recent months, offshore oil rig jobs have become something that almost no one wants to do and with all of the media attention with the Deep Horizon oil spill ion the Gulf of Mexico, it is easy to understand why. The spill, which started on April 20 2010, has left many workers who cannot help with the cleanup looking for other jobs. This is leaving many openings and many offshore oil rig jobs are going unmanned. This high demand field is in need of some great and dedicated workers and if these jobs are not filled soon, oil production and refining may suffer.

However, despite what the media would make people think, the Gulf of Mexico is not the only place where there is this type of work available. Offshore oil rigging jobs are available all around the world including places and waters such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Algeria, Australia, Egypt and many areas in the United States as well as other countries.

Some of the most prominent jobs in this field require that the worker be in excellent physical shape and have the stamina needed to work long hours. In addition, the potential employee must know something of the oil industry and how the product is recovered, refined and sold. For example, does the potential employee understand how the drilling process works? Is he familiar with the names of the equipment and how to use it? What about the refining process, is the potential employee familiar with it and how it works?

If the potential employee can answer yes, he does not mind getting dirty and is ready to work in a labor-intensive environment where timing and knowledge are crucial, there are hundreds of offshore oil rig jobs available to them. Some of the most in-demand jobs available right now include those in the fields of oil production, which entails drilling for and recovering crude oil before it goes to the refineries. While this job is considered an entry-level position, it pays very well, which is a product of the demand being greater than the supply of workers available for this type of job.

Another condition of becoming employed in the oil industry is the travel requirements. In many cases, especially with off shore drilling sites, the employees must live close to the drilling site or they must relocate somewhere close to it at least for the duration of the project. While travel requirements can vary with the type and length of the project required, sometimes, an employee may need to relocate or travel hundreds of miles away from their homes for six months a year or more. If this is something a person cannot do, then this job is not for them.
