The way most people decide to fly is when they are in an airplane. The Third Significant Event:

That most wonderful and significant event comes when your CFI tells you it is time and you are going to "solo." It is an exciting time and one that also can bring worry. It becomes clear that all responsibility for a safe and successful flight rest with you alone in the airplane during your solo flights. Bolstered with assurances from the CFI that you have the skills, knowledge and training to do this successfully, you launch into the air.

Once you complete the first flight there are two other customary flights to display you can actually fly a plane.

The building blocks of flight training continue leading toward the end goal of pilot certification. One of the next blocks would be the next significant event during fight training, the long cross-country flight.

The Fourth Significant Event:

Flying your Solo is a big deal since you get to fly a plane by yourself and from that point forward, with your CFI's approval, you can fly the plane for training by yourself, fly solo when you want. This is a big deal in flight training.

The next big deal is to take your solo skills and put them to work flying a cross-country event meeting FAA requirements for a cross-country flight. First, you fly a short cross-country flight, and then you get to do the Long Cross Country Flight. This meant you must do all the flight planning, including plane checkout, fuel calculations, weather checks, and filing a flight plan. The CFI will check all planning but you are going to fly solo on a trip of approximately 250 miles with all the prep work done by you.

Your requirements are to use only a heading compass, an Omni directional radio signal, sectional map, and visual cues of the terrain to find your way to the destination airport and return to home base. Successful competing this aspect of training is necessary to move on.

Many other milestone arise as you work you way through the physical flight controls, mental exams and personal stress but you start to believe you can actually fly a plane, no matter where, no matter what conditions arise. This is the start of a fatal flaw of pilots, over confidence, believing they know all, have super flight knowledge, and do not make mistakes. This potential fatal flaw is normally covered time and again by your CFI, repeatedly covered to a point of being over done but this attitude must be checked.

At some point the CFI will tell you it is time to take your practical test for certification the natural end of the training.

The Fifth Significant Event:

On practical test day many things will happen along the path and surprises always develop. You must be prepared to handle these which might range from bad weather on test day to malfunctions to your airplane. How you handle these unexpected events is significant in your total evaluation. It will be a stressful time from start to finish.

Come on inside and let me get you the temporary Private Pilot Certification".

The relief that floods over you at that point exceeds expectation no matter how you thought you would feel and the joy will follow you for months. The first time you go to the airport to fly as a certified pilot you create a good memory and a memory that will last.

Do you have a passion for flying? Are you interested in learning to fly? This article is intended to cover the basics of obtaining a Federal Aviation Administration Private Pilot Certificate with a Single-Engine Land Rating. To earn this certificate, there is a lot of time, dedication, hard work, and passion involved.

While there are other certificates available from the FAA, such as the Recreational Pilot Certificate, and the Sport Pilot Certificate, these certificates impose weight, distance, and passenger restrictions. As such, I have decided in this article to focus instead on the Private Pilot Certificate.

A Private Pilot Certificate with a Single-Engine Land Rating, or private pilot license as some refer to it, allows a pilot to fly any single-engine aircraft that will take off from, and land on, the ground. This certificate also grants increased privileges over the lower certifications like the student pilot certificate, recreational pilot certificate or the newer sport pilot certificate.

Requirements

The basic requirements to obtaining a Private Pilot License with a Single-Engine Land Rating are stated in the Code of Federal Regulations, or CFR, 61.103 and are as follows:

Must be at least 17 years of age
Read, write, speak and understand English
Pass an FAA Medical Exam
Pass an FAA Written Knowledge Test with a score of at least 70
Obtain at least 40 Hours of logged flight time and aviation training.
Pass an FAA Check Ride / Oral Exam

It should also be noted that in order to earn a Private Pilot Certificate, you will need to start with a Student Pilot Certificate. The requirements of which are stated in CFR 61.83 and are as follows:

Must be at least 16 years of age
Read, write, speak and understand English
Pass an FAA Medical Exam
Before you can solo you will need to pass a knowledge test.

The Path to Flight

The normal path to becoming a pilot is as follows:

The MOST important first step you can take to becoming a pilot is to simply do it. Start your private pilot training today. Too often people put off their dreams, I strongly encourage anyone with a passion to learn how to fly to get started as soon as you can. Taking the first step towards your dreams is the most effective way to achieve them.

Get an FAA Medical Exam

This is a physical that requires certain health requirements to obtain. It is required to obtain your Student Pilot License during private pilot training, and you will have to maintain a current valid FAA Medical Certification as long as you want to be able to fly.

Funding

Make sure you are financially prepared to follow through on the training. Average costs to obtain your Private Pilot Certificate can range between $5,000 to $10,000 and up depending on the flight school, the aircraft being flown, and gas prices. My research suggests the average cost is about $8,000.

Locate a School

Find a good flight school for your private pilot training. There are two basic categories of schools you can go to, part 61 and part 141. Part 61 schools are the schools you will find at your local airport and have easier schedules for training. These generally require a more flight instruction training hours to receive your license. A part 141 school is an institutionalized school or college program accredited by the FAA to train pilots. These programs follow FAA approved training aids and have to meet performance standards and will typically require more time overall to receive your license.

If you are planning on attending a part 61 school, you can choose to use a home-study course for the ground school and FAA written exam prep. Your authorized instructor will still need to review the course you completed and check you off before you take the exam, but this can be a money saving method that allows you to get started right away towards your goal.

Pick the Plane

Pick the plane you would like to fly, there are many types of single-engine airplanes but most pilots end up training in a Cessna. Once you have you private pilot certificate you can receive training on other airframes and get checked off to fly other makes and models.

Start Training

Start your training with your ground school or home-study course. Read your books, and learn everything you can while studying for your first test.

You will also be getting in your first practical flight instruction and learning how to apply what you are learning in ground school during actual flight.

The FAA Written Knowledge Exam

Once you are ready, have a few flights under your belt, and have studied... it is time to take the FAA Written Aeronautical Knowledge Test. You must score a 70 or higher to pass.

Solo Flying

Your solo flight is a "right of passage" into the world of being a pilot. When you are ready, with around 12-20 hours of flight instruction under your belt, your instructor will endorse you to complete your first solo. This is the first real test you will face to find out if you are ready to move forward with your training. During the solo you will rent an aircraft, climb in, and fly it alone. Your first solo typically consists of making three takeoffs and three full stop landings while flying the traffic pattern. Once completed you will have proven your new learned skills to yourself and your instructor, it is a great confidence builder.

Cross-Country Flight

The next major step is to complete a cross-country flight. During this flight you will be utilizing all of the information and experience you have gained. It will be a test of your skills and aeronautical knowledge. This flight typically consists of a solo flight to three different points far away from your home airport and your instructor.

The Check-Ride

You have completed several solo flights, your cross-country flights, and you nighttime solos and cross-country flights. You have met or exceeded the minimum required 40 hours of flight instruction, and your instructor has recommended you to take the Practical / Oral exam.

You will meet with a FAA Designated Pilot Examiner, or DPE, and after an extensive exam they will judge whether you are worthy of your Private Pilot Certification. During the exam you will be drilled orally on everything you learned. You will then need to prove your skills in the cockpit, and in the air to within certain FAA prescribed limits. Your DPE will provide you with instructions, and you will be expected to perform them unassisted.

The Goal

It has been a long hard journey, but it has also been a very rewarding experience and you have learned much. You have completed your private pilot training, and developed your skills. You prepared for and passed your check-ride and at last, you have the distinction and pride to call yourself a FAA Certified Private Pilot. The sky is yours to explore freely! But there is still much more to do! You can now choose to acquire your instrument rating so you can fly when the weather conditions prevent visual flight rules, you can also go on to seek your multi-engine rating, or even continue your certification path to fly for commercial purposes, or become yourself a Certified Flight Instructor. For you have been challenged and succeeded. For you can now literally reach for the sky's limit.

In most cases your Private Pilot Training will take somewhere around two or three months. You can do an accelerated training course that you can complete in as little as 3 weeks or so. There are things that will hold you back if you aren't prepared.

The first thing you need to know is there are two parts to your Pilot Training. There are aeronautical knowledge (Ground Instruction) and an Aeronautical Experience (Flight Instruction) portions of each phase of your flight training.

There are three phases to your pilot training that you will need to understand. Each one of these phases has both the aeronautical knowledge and aeronautical experience requirements you will need to understand. Understanding the process before you start your private pilot training, will help you be successful in achieving your dream of learning to fly an airplane.

The first part of your Pilot Training is the pre solo phase. You will learn the basics of flying an airplane during this phase of your pilot training. This phase of training will be the most difficult for most students since the habit of driving a car has been with you most of your life. Once you are through this phase, you will have confidence in yourself and you will be able to conduct solo flights limited by your flight instructor.

The pre solo phase of your pilot training will also have an aeronautical requirement that you will have to meet also. A pre solo written exam is also a requirement. This exam will be made up by your flight instructor and will focus on the aircraft and the airspace you will be flying in.

The next part of your Pilot License Training is the post solo or cross country phase. This phase of your private pilot license training, you will focus on different types of landings, night flying and instrument flight. A good part of this phase will be solo flights so you can build your solo flight time towards the private pilot general requirements.

This part of your training does not have any specific requirements for aeronautical knowledge, however you should have your private pilot written test completed before you get into the flight test preparation phase of your training.

The final phase of your pilot training will be the flight test preparation phase. The Practical Test Standards is the outline for the practical test, this will be your focus in this phase of your private pilot license training.

The FAA written test will need to be completed before you are eligible to take the test. The Federal Aviation Regulations require the Private Pilot Written test have 60 multiple choice questions.

The Private Pilot Practical Test Standards is the FAA's outline for your practical test. Broken down into Tasks and Areas of Operation, this will be a guide for you that is published by the FAA. This will be the outline that the pilot examiner will use to conduct your flight test.

Once you have completed your Practical test, your Private Pilot License will be good for the rest of your life. The best thing you can do is plan your training out and understand the process before you start your pilot training.

Let me share a bit about myself first, just so that you know it is possible to become a pilot at any point in your life. When I was 35 years old, I quit a well paying job as a computer programmer. I had always been drawn to flying airplanes and at some point something clicked and I realized that if I was going to make a change and live my dream now was the time. So, I picked up AOPA's Flight Training Magazine and learned that it was now easier than ever to become a pilot.

The Big First Step

Probably the biggest first step you must take if you want to get moving on a career that involves flying an aircraft is to get a pilot's license that enables you to serve as a Private Pilot.

A Private Pilot license (certificate) allows you to carry friends and family and create new adventures. It is also the time to start building hours and is the stepping stones to higher ratings such as an Instrument Rating (fly in clouds), a Multi-Engine Rating (an airplane with more than one engine), and a Commercial Rating (fly and get paid).

To put that in context, there are lesser pilot's licenses such as the Student Pilot license or the Sports or Recreational Pilot licenses but there are a lot of limitations on those licenses, which will limit your chances of become a full-fledged career pilot.

Quick Note: If all you want is to be able to fly in support of your business (but not AS your business) or to be able to fly with some freedom as part of your private life, a private pilots license is a good step and it's a natural first step even if you plan to go on to train to become a commercial pilot down the road.

So How Do YOU Do It?

Getting your Private Pilot certificate, like any certification, is mostly set in stone. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has set out very specific steps and milestones that you have to reach before you can get your rating. Visit the FAA website and look under Licenses and Certifications for more information!

Before you start, you will have to be at least 16 years of age to get your Student Pilot license which is your "ticket to learn," but in order to get your Private Pilot license you must be at least 17 years old. With that simple requirement out of the way, the step-by-step process toward finally realizing your dream of having a private pilot's license is...

1. Research the flight schools in your area and make sure that the one you use has a good reputation, a well-developed training program and the airplanes to support it. The teaching staff that both knows how to fly and knows how to teach is important. Make sure the flight schools that make your cut are certified to offer pilot training that will result in a FAA recognized pilot's license.

2. Make sure your finances are in order because flight school will run between $3000 and $5000. There are scholarships available and you might be able to use federal student loans through FAFSA if the school qualifies. If you are a veteran and signed-up for the GI Bill, it will pay for some of your training.

3. Enroll in the flight school and clear your schedule. Getting your pilot's license should be your life's passion for the next few months. If you stop and start and stop and start you will be wasting your time and money. Flying is a skill and the more you fly the better you will be.

4. Get a medical certificate that is specific to aviation. A general check up is not enough so work with the school to find a doctor who can help you pass the medical requirements to be able to fly. You can find this information again at the FAA website.

5. Take a ground school class either at your flight school, a local community college, or on your computer. At some point you will need to take a written exam for your Private Pilot license. If you attend the classes, they will take about four to five weeks to complete.

6. Take AND PASS the written exam required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) at any FAA testing center.

7. Work with the school to complete thirty to forty hours of required flight time with a certificated flight instructor (CFI). You can move through the requirements at your own pace which means as fast as you can afford to get through it and schedule the time with the school and the instructor. The school will provide the airplane as that is part of the fees.

8. Keep flying. Fly solo. Fly cross-country. Fly at night. Before you know it, you will be ready for your check ride!

9. For the final "big" exam, you will go on a flight with an FAA Designated Pilot Examiner who will ask you questions and watch your flying skills to determine if you a pilot worthy of a Private Pilot license.

10. And this is the most important: Have Fun!

Flying Is Fun and Rewarding

You are going to learn a lot during this process. Don't be fooled, it is a lot of new knowledge to learn and you are basically learning an entirely new set of physical skills similar to when you learned to swim or ride a bike. So throw yourself into your training and get as comfortable controlling an airplane as you are driving a car.

You can do a lot not only to speed up the process but to cut costs by working hard on your own to conquer the skills you need to become a great private pilot. You can study the written the test on your own and complete the FAA test whenever you are ready. But once you have that license, you will be glad you worked hard to get through the process successfully so that from now on you can honestly say to people, "I am a pilot!"

It is time to tie all of the Student Pilot /Pre-Solo and Post Solo Requirements together. In order to be eligible for the Private Pilot License Practical test, you have to have everything that I have listed so far DOCUMENTED in your logbook I go more in detail in my book but I will get you up to speed on this.

Now I will explain the requirements for you to be eligible for your Private Pilot Practical Test. All of the Previous requirements have to be completed for the student solo and the student solo cross countries. If you haven't looked at them yet here they are:

Now this is where the requirements that usually show up on the internet come from. This is only the aeronautical experience regulation. This is the regulation that most flight schools make their cost estimates from and where most people who have nothing to do with aviation write their articles from.

(a) For an airplane single-engine rating. Except as provided in paragraph (k) of this section, a person who applies for a private pilot certificate with an airplane category and single-engine class rating must log at least 40 hours of flight time that includes at least 20 hours of flight training from an authorized instructor and 10 hours of solo flight training in the areas of operation listed in §61.107(b)(1) of this part, and the training must include at least-

(1) 3 hours of cross-country flight training in a single-engine airplane;

(2) Except as provided in §61.110 of this part, 3 hours of night flight training in a single-engine airplane that includes-

(i) One cross-country flight of over 100 nautical miles total distance; and

(ii) 10 takeoffs and 10 landings to a full stop (with each landing involving a flight in the traffic pattern) at an airport.

(3) 3 hours of flight training in a single-engine airplane on the control and maneuvering of an airplane solely by reference to instruments, including straight and level flight, constant airspeed climbs and descents, turns to a heading, recovery from unusual flight attitudes, radio communications, and the use of navigation systems/facilities and radar services appropriate to instrument flight;

(4) 3 hours of flight training in preparation for the practical test in a single-engine airplane, which must have been performed within 60 days preceding the date of the test; and

(5) 10 hours of solo flight time in a single-engine airplane, consisting of at least-

(i) 5 hours of solo cross-country time;

(ii) One solo cross-country flight of at least 150 nautical miles total distance, with full-stop landings at a minimum of three points, and one segment of the flight consisting of a straight-line distance of at least 50 nautical miles between the takeoff and landing locations; and

(iii) Three takeoffs and three landings to a full stop (with each landing involving a flight in the traffic pattern) at an airport with an operating control tower.

Then there is the other eligibility regulation for the Private Pilot License Flight Test.

(a) Except as provided in paragraphs (b) and (c) of this section, to be eligible for a practical test for a certificate or rating issued under this part, an applicant must:

(1) Pass the required knowledge test within the 24-calendar-month period preceding the month the applicant completes the practical test, if a knowledge test is required;

(2) Present the knowledge test report at the time of application for the practical test, if a knowledge test is required;

(3) Have satisfactorily accomplished the required training and obtained the aeronautical experience prescribed by this part for the certificate or rating sought;

(4) Hold at least a current third-class medical certificate, if a medical certificate is required;

(5) Meet the prescribed age requirement of this part for the issuance of the certificate or rating sought;

(6) Have an endorsement, if required by this part, in the applicant's logbook or training record that has been signed by an authorized instructor who certifies that the applicant-

(i) Has received and logged training time within 60 days preceding the date of application in preparation for the practical test;

(ii) Is prepared for the required practical test; and

(iii) Has demonstrated satisfactory knowledge of the subject areas in which the applicant was deficient on the airman knowledge test; and

(7) Have a completed and signed application form.

There is also the ground instruction requirements. Lately the FAA has been getting very tough on this. There have been many cases where students have been signed off for flight tests and the instructor never did any ground instruction with them. You want to remember that your instructor needs to have this documented for you to be eligible for the flight test.

Personally I make up one sheet with all the flight training and all the ground training and sign it at the bottom. This way I have a complete record and the examiner can plainly see every subject area.

Within these three regulations are all of the others listed in the student pilot requirements and the student pilot pre solo cross country requirements. Most people don't have a clue about all of this. And once you have started on the wrong track on your Pilot Training, it can become a very expensive venture.

This was the main reason that I ended up Writing "Airfreddy's Guide on Learning To Fly". This happens all of the time all over the country. I can't tell you how many emails I get from people who are frustrated at the entire process. If they had planned and researched ahead of time, they would have gotten done in a realistic budget and on a realistic schedule.

Getting your Private Pilot License and Learning to Fly can be a great experience, but if you don't understand that every time to delay, switch instructors, schools or wait to get your written test done. You will get more and more frustrated and I see it ALL THE TIME.

Your goal is to become a safe and proficient pilot on a realistic budget. Planning this process out is the most important thing you can do. You don't want to jump and and then find you are on the wrong track.
