They grow faster in warmer climates where you can sometimes produce three crops a year if you are near enough to the equator.

The leaders in shrimp farming in the Eastern Hemisphere are Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, India and China. Malaysia, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, The Philippines, Australia and Myanmar also have large shrimp farming industries. Mexico, Belize, Ecuador and Brazil are the leading producers in the Western Hemisphere. There are shrimp farms in Honduras, Panama, Colombia, Guatemala, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Peru. The United States, Western Europe and Japan are the major shrimp importing nations. They have high-tech shrimp farming but their production is insignificant. Saudi Arabia and Iran produce the most farmed shrimp in the Middle East.

Shrimp farms use a one or two-phase production cycle. With the one-phase production cycle the shrimp spend a short period in acclimation tanks, then they are put directly into the growout ponds. Farms that use the two-phase production cycle stock juvenile shrimp from hatcheries in nursery ponds and several weeks latter transfer them to growout ponds. The shrimp need aeration in all phases of growth and solar aeration is best answer. Hatcheries sell two products: Nauplii, which are tiny, newly hatched, first stage larvae, and postlarvae that have already develop through the three larval stages. Good aeration produces clean water and healthy nauplii, postlarvae and shrimp. Solar aeration is the best investment for any shrimp farm and is available now.

Shrimp normally spawn at night and females may produce 50,000 to 1,000,000 eggs, which hatch in one day. The first larval stage is nauplii, which look like tiny aquatic spiders. The nauplii feed on their egg-yoke reserves for a couple of days. The nauplii then metamorphose into zoeae, which have feathery appendages. Zoeae feed on algae and formulated feeds for three to five days and then metamorphose into myses. Myses are just starting to look like shrimp and they feed on algae, formulated feeds and zooplankton. Myses metamorphose into postlarvae, which look like adult shrimp. Postlarvae feed on zooplankton, detritus and commercial feeds. From the day the eggs hatch till the postlarvae are ready to be moved to the farm takes about 25 days. To keep the product healthy, all larvae stages need adequate aeration, and solar aeration is the right answer to preserve our water quality and keep our earth green.

There are all sizes of hatcheries from home operations to medium and large-scale operations. All hatcheries need clean water and sunlight. It is impossible to maintain a healthy shrimp life cycle without aeration, which is, I repeat, best produced by solar power.

Shrimp farmers next move the animals from nursery ponds within 30 days to growout ponds. This move increases the survival rates of their juvenile shrimp and increases their profits. The greatest danger throughout the production cycle is virus problems, which can be avoided with sanitary conditions of clean water with adequate aeration. Shrimp farming, like any business, is about producing the highest quality product for the lowest cost possible, so that at the close of the business cycle there is a superior profit. Reducing electrical usage with solar aeration adds to a higher profit margin.

Can you really make money in the freshwater shrimp farming business? If I had a nickel for every time I was asked that question, I'd have a lot of nickels.

The short answer is, yes, you can...IF...

First, a little background. Since the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, more and more buyers of shrimp are becoming aware of food quality. In the past, consumers bought whenever the price was right. But now, buyers need the extra assurance that what they are buying is clean, good quality shrimp - and at a good price.

Freshwater shrimp farming is a niche that is taking off directly because of this issue of quality. So the answer to the question is Yes - IF you can manage the quality of the water the shrimp grow in. Further, if you can document your management, then you should be looking at a very profitable niche business.

How can you manage the quality of the water? Oxygenation is key. You will need to make sure the shrimp can breathe. Also, knowing what is in the water to begin with is important. For example, is the water running into your ponds coming from a chemical saturated cornfield? Not so good.

How can you calculate your potential? When your ponds or tanks are properly controlled and you feed your shrimp properly, you should yield 600 to 800 pounds, maybe as much as 900 pounds of shrimp per acre of water. There will be an average of 10 shrimp in one pound at the 8-12 count per pound size.

Check the current prices for 8-12 count shrimp that you find in the grocery store. These shrimp are probably raised in suspicious quality salt water in some foreign and unregulated place. Your shrimp will be of a vastly higher quality than these even if you screw up, so these prices will give you a conservative starting point for your calculations.

Managing your water to grow a quality product is 50% of the equation for a profitable business, and effective marketing is the other 50%. You can increase your profit substantially by using creative marketing strategies.

For example, selling directly to your customers at retail rather than selling at wholesale is an easy way to boost profits. Many shrimp production operations have festivals at harvest time and offer a day of fun at the farm and sell crafts and farm products, including shrimp, at premium prices.

One shrimp raiser I know uses a sign in his yard to tell when harvest will be. He says he never has enough to fill the demand of that one day.

Keep in mind, this is one business you can start on the side and with not much investment. I know of another shrimp farmer who uses three-foot deep kiddie pools in his back yard. So, yes, you can easily make a profit raising freshwater shrimp.

One of the fastest growing business niches today is freshwater shrimp farming. Many people are starting to raise shrimp because they want to eat better food for less money. Mostly they want to cash in on the enormous profit margins in selling fresh water shrimp directly to consumers.

These are the essentials:

You need something to raise them in. Although most people raise their shrimp in ponds, you can use anything that gets the depth you need. You can use tanks and even swimming pools. I first started looking into raising freshwater shrimp when I found an old hot tub had been left on my property and I was trying to find a use for it.
You need somewhere to put the pond, tank or pool. Obviously, a pond would go in a field, but your tanks or pools could go into a barn, just in your backyard, or even your basement. I read about a guy who really did raise shrimp in his condo basement in some small diameter swimming pools he set up there.
You need to have good water. Have your water tested, especially if you will be using runoff or captured water. If you're filling a pool with tap water, you will need to give it time to evaporate the chlorine out and to warm up.
You need to oxygenate the water. The critters need to breathe. You will need to agitate the water or pump air into it. You can use a paddle like system or you can use a bubbler. You can also use a fountain type oxygenator. Try to make or buy one that uses solar power so you don't have to worry about your power going out.
You need to buy good quality juveniles to grow out. There are a number of great growers out there. I have a link on my website to a guy with a great directory for everything you will need.
You need to feed them good food. Even though they are bottom feeders, your result will be tastier if you feed them properly. Again, my website will show you where detailed information can be found.
You need to keep other critters out. They like to eat shrimp too and that cuts into your profits big time. Unfortunately, this means you need to keep the bass out. They love shrimp.
You need to make a sign. Make a sign that you can put in your yard letting people know when you will be harvesting. Plan to have someone help your customers with parking. Believe me, you will sell out in one day.

So, my advice is to go for it - start a freshwater farming business right now. You will never eat a better tasting shrimp than the one you raised yourself. The only downside to this whole idea is your friends and family will try to convince you to have a big shrimp boil or grill and invite them over for chow and then eat up all your potential profits.

How much money can I make by freshwater shrimp farming? That's a good question. It's really very easy to calculate potential profits from freshwater shrimp farming. Except for all the variables, that is.

The first thing you need to know is how much surface area of water you have. Here is how you do the basic mathematics to begin calculating your potential gross profit. Most ponds and tanks are either a rectangular or a circular shape, so how do you do it?

If it's a rectangle, measure one side and one end. Then multiply those numbers together to get how many square feet of surface area there are. Round down to the nearest foot rather than worry about converting inches to feet.

Since most profit calculations are based on acres, it is a big help to convert your square feet to acres. There are 43,560 square feet in an acre so divide your square feet by 43,560.

Here is an example. Your pond is 45 feet wide and 250 feet long. That is a surface area of 11,250 square feet. Divide that by the number of square feet in an acre, which is 43,560, and you find you have about a quarter of an acre of surface area on your pond.

Yields will range from as little as 300 pounds to as many as 900 pounds of shrimp per acre, depending on your grow-out variables. So, using a conservative, middle ground, 500 pounds per acre number, your yield on one fourth of an acre would be 125 pounds.

What if you have a circular pond or you are using a round tank? Now you need a special formula to calculate the surface area. Reach way back in your memory for that formula for the area of a circle. Area equals pi, sounds like the pie you eat, times the square of your radius. Radius is half the diameter, which is the distance across the pond at the middle.

To get your radius, just measure from the center of your pond to the outside edge. You don't have to get wet to do this, just stand on the shore and eyeball where the center of your pond is and then measure to where the edge would be. Now multiply that number by itself to square it.

Here is an example. You measured the radius to be 20 feet. Multiply 20 by itself, or 20 times 20, and you get 400. Multiply that number by pi which is roughly 3.14. Your answer should be 1256 square feet.

Divide 1256 square feet by the number of square feet in an acre, which is 43,560, and you have just under 3% of an acre. Your yield on 3% of an acre might be 3% of 500 pounds, or 15 pounds.

Right away you may decide that 15 pounds isn't enough to be worth your time, or you may decide you just need more ponds. If you decide on additional ponds or tanks, you can work these calculations backwards to calculate how much additional surface area you will need to get the result you want.

For example, let's say you want to raise a ton of shrimp. Yes, I mean 2000 pounds of shrimp. If you can yield 500 pounds per acre, you will need 4 acres of water. Multiply the square feet in an acre, 43,560, by 4 and you find you need 174,240 square feet of water.

Enter that number in your calculator and then hit the square root key. It looks like a check mark with a horizontal line going off the top of it. The answer, 417, is the size of a square pond you need to go out and dig. It doesn't have to be deep, just 417 feet long on one side and 417 feet wide on the other.

Calculating profit potential from freshwater shrimp farming is a matter of starting with your gross income and subtracting all of your expenses. Here is how you do it and some of the items you need to consider.

First, you need calculate how many pounds of shrimp you can grow in your pond or tank. Once you know how much shrimp you can grow, you need to know how much money you can get for them. Once you have those figures, you can calculate your gross income. Let's talk about how to gauge how much you can get for your shrimp.

The last time I went to my big box grocery store, they had Thailand farm raised headless shrimp for $14.99 a pound. We shouldn't use that price per pound in our calculations because we have to account for the weight of the shrimp heads. We can guess-estimate the weight of the head to be one fourth the weight of the whole shrimp, and I might be wrong there, so that's a variable that needs to be verified.

If headless shrimp go for $14.99, then we can guestimate whole shrimp might go for 75% of that, or $11.24 a pound. That just sounds a bit high to me and since I like to round down, my guestimate will be $10.00 a pound for shrimp right out of the pond, on ice and in a plastic bag. Multiply your yield in pounds by this delivered price of $10 per pound.

To arrive at a potential net income from raising your shrimp, you will need to deduct your expenses from your gross income. Net income is the number you get to pay taxes on. Coming up with your list of expenses is the hard part because your costs will be different from anyone else. Actually, paying the taxes is the hardest part.

There are two kinds of expense categories to consider. One category includes your set-up expenses and the other category includes your ongoing expenses.

Set-up expenses are things like installing the pond and buying your equipment. You might need nets or an aerator if you are going to use one, water meters and other equipment. This will be your largest outlay. You may already have a suitable pond, or you may want to use an above ground swimming pool in a building you can heat. So you will have to get these costs nailed down.

Ongoing expenses include items like the cost of purchasing your juveniles each year, the cost of their feed, electricity, labor, and not least in importance, the cost of the sign you put out front letting potential customers know when harvest day will be.

Although highly monitored by the government, the demand for Gulf shrimp is down. The public is concerned about the safety of eating anything coming from the Gulf. This has reduced the number of boats that are going out. Until the public has confidence that food coming from the Gulf is safe, the fishing industry in that area will suffer.

China is the leader in production of prawns although a lot of southeast Asian countries also produce prawns.

Till the last decade only Giant river prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) were farmed. But recently, the oriental river prawn (M. nipponense) are farmed in China , and monsoon river prawn (M. malcolmsonii) are farmed in India.

Prawns are farmed by inoculating postlarvae from the hatcheries into the nurseries and then releasing them into the ponds. Prawns are continuously harvested from the pond or in batches. Raising prawns is a lot like other types of food animals. The operation requires special attention and hard work; the ponds are stocked in the spring with juvenile prawns that grow throughout the summer. When the prawns are large enough to harvest, the farmers drain the ponds, and the prawns follow the water flow as it exits into a catch basin. Once in the basin they are then netted, placed in baskets and carried on for additional processing.

Shrimp look similar to prawns but their gill structure is lamellar whereas it is branching in prawns. The two have been used interchangeably though and the distinction is more in the area of the world where they are being consumed rather than on their physical appearance.

In Germany, United Kingdom, Australia and South East Asia the word prawn is used where as in United States and Canada the term shrimp is used; prawn being reserved for only the extremely large sizes of shrimp. Most American wild caught shrimp is landed from coastal waters of the Gulf coast, Atlantic and Pacific Ocean.

There are wide variety of species coming both from the warm water and cold water; the cold water shrimps are smaller and more succulent. Shrimps may vary in color from red, light brown, pink, deep red, grayish-white, yellow, gray-green and dark green. Shrimp marketing is according to the size the general terms being colossal (10 or less per pound), jumbo (11-15), extra-large (16-20), large (21-30), medium (31-35), small (36-45) and miniature (about 100). In the United States, jumbo and colossal shrimp are commonly called prawns. Larger shrimp are typically more expensive per pound than smaller specimens.

North America is home to several species of wild shrimp including white shrimp (Litopenaeus setiferus), brown shrimp (Farfantepenaeus aztecus), pink shrimp (Penaeus duorarum), royal red shrimp (Pleoticus robustus or Hymenopenaeus robustus) and rock shrimp (Sicyonia brevirostris), Northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) and Pacific pink shrimp (Pandalus jordani).

Shrimp and prawns have high nutritive value. Both are sources of iodine, calcium, proteins and other nutrients. Both are a source of polyunsaturated fats which have anti-inflammatory properties and stop the cartilage in joints from eroding. Studies have also found their omega-3s reduce the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis and have anti cancer properties.

Shrimp and prawns are served as several dishes like curry and pickle in southeast Asia, and as garlic prawns in Spain. Other dishes include prawn sauce, tapas and potted shrimp. Prawns are also served with chicken wings and rice. In Philippines a major delicacy is prawns in coconut milk. The dish is prepared by cooking prawns in coconut milk with a ginger, salt and pepper.

Shrimp are amazing. They come in several sizes and they taste delicious. Yet there are many things you probably do not know about shrimp. These delectable little crustaceans have plenty of secrets that you are about to learn. For example, did you know that raw shrimp are known as "green" shrimp?

Shrimp have ten legs. Since most of us do not see shrimp before they are shelled, we do not see the legs. What we call the head of the shrimp is actually the head and the thorax. It takes up half the body size of the shrimp. They are cousins to other crustaceans such as crabs and lobsters. They also are not far from insects on the old family tree, which is the reason some chefs call them "bugs."

A billion pounds of shrimp is consumed in the United States every year. Did you know Las Vegas, Nevada holds the record for the amount of shrimp consumed in this country? It does... 60,000 pounds of shrimp per day. This is more than the rest of the country combined. That is one big pile of shrimp! About 90% of the shrimp eaten here comes from Asia and Central America, with 40% of that being farmed shrimp. Out of those billion pounds of shrimp, 80% is eaten in restaurants. It appears that Americans like to eat shrimp; they just do not like to cook it. Cooking shrimp really is not difficult... it just takes a few times to get it just right.

As Forrest Gump would say, "Shrimp is the fruit of the sea." He then goes on to list 21 different ways to prepare it, including three different methods of frying. Shrimp really is versatile and can be used in soups, stews, as well as for appetizers, main dishes, and snacks. These tasty gems can be added to almost anything. Saute them, fry them or broil them... they all taste wonderful.

The terms "prawn" and "shrimp" are often used interchangeably, when in fact they are two separate creatures. This is confusing even for the experts. For example, the California spot prawn is really a shrimp while the ridgeback shrimp is really a prawn. Fish markets often label every large shrimp as a prawn, but there are physical differences between the two. Shrimp have side flaps that overlap while prawns have two segments on their tail that are the same size.

Shrimp are a great choice for easy appetizers. They are available in a wide variety of sizes so you can choose some that fit your recipes and your budget. Shrimp are sold by count. This will tell you what size the shrimp are, such as colossal, jumbo, large, medium, or small. Jumbo shrimp, for example, would be labeled 21/25 on the wrapper. This means you will find 21 to 25 shrimp per pound. Serve them up to show off their pearly pink shrimpness or add them to other recipes.

Your shrimp are going to have different textures and flavors depending on where they lived and what they ate. Wild shrimp are known for their intense flavors caused by a wide variety of food. Farmed shrimp are fed a ration, giving them a blander flavor. Wild shrimp are also firmer than farmed shrimp since they must roam to find food.

Only those who are allergic to shellfish would doubt that Shrimp Scampi is probably on the menu in heaven. St. Peter himself no doubt munches on the garlicky treats from time to time. I'm not sure if they're cooked on a stove or grilled over charcoal in those green pastures in the sky, but I'm sure the shrimp tastes divine.

My education involving shrimp began one evening in a little hole in the wall oyster bar named Jimmy D's American Shrimp Restaurant and Fish Market! Located in a little fishing town on Florida's northwestern Gulf Coast, it was a fish market on one side of the small cinder block building and a fish market on the other.

The café were packed with people wanting seafood, so we sat on a wooden bench and waited for someone to leave the tiny café so we could take their place; there were only six tables.

After consuming two large orders of Shrimp Scampi, I asked the chef, who was also the owner of this little fish shack to give me the recipe for the best Shrimp Scampi I had ever eaten. He surprised me with the same simple recipe I had been using at home, which included the main ingredients in any Scampi dish; shrimp, garlic and lemon. There was however, a secret ingredient; offshore shrimp!

He uses only Wild American Shrimp, harvested off the gulf coast or the southern Atlantic Ocean. Jimmy D told me that most of the shrimp eaten in the United States is raised in either Asia or Latin America. Foreign shrimp simply does not taste as good as home grown.

I discovered later that almost 90% of shrimp consumed in America is foreign raised on farms in Southeast Asia, East Asia, South Asia and South America. The American shrimper simply cannot compete with the flood of farmed raised shrimp that is shipped into the United States.

Wild American Shrimp is catching on with folks all over the U.S., who like me, have decided to ask for the best. We'll pay a little more per pound at the market at the market, than pond raised shrimp that have been shipped over the ocean in a container ship.

Foreign shrimp have large amounts of fungicides, antibiotics, pesticides and algaecides in them, while Wild American shrimp feed on plankton and other protein sources in its own natural environment. They are more nutritious and have a more flavorful taste than their Asian or Latin American cousins. Simply cook both American Wild Shrimp and foreign shrimp and eat them. Wild shrimp will win the taste test hands down!

Besides the chemicals introduced to foreign shrimp as they are grown in earthen ponds, much of the shrimp are raised on grained based food. This gives them a bland taste compared to the products harvested off the southern shores of the United States.

I like preparing Shrimp Scampi almost as much as eating them. Here's how I cook them on the charcoal grill:
Ingredients
o 2 lbs. raw large shrimp
o 1/4 cups olive oil
o 3 cloves crushed garlic
o 1/2 black pepper
o juice of 1 large lemon
o 1 tablespoon lemon juice
o 3 cloves crushed garlic
o 1/2 black pepper
o 1/2 cup melted butter
o 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
o 1/3 cup finely chopped chives 2 cloves garlic, crushed
o salt to taste

Preparation:
Mix the ingredients in large bowl. On the underside of the tail, split each shrimp. This allows the mixture to penetrate the shell. Cover the bowl and refrigerate for a couple of hours.

Allow the fire in the grill to become medium hot. I use a fish basket to cook my shrimp, held about 6 inches from the coals. Cook 2-3 minutes per side, or until they turn pink. Don't over cook.

More markets around the country are carrying certified American Live Shrimp. If yours doesn't, there are plenty of places on the internet that will ship them to you. Happy eating!

You've been there. It's 4:00. You made every sales call on your schedule. You weren't just an order-taker today. You sold stuff. A sense of confidence, an energized "I can do this" feeling fills you up like the rush you get when you tee-off a perfect 250-yard drive. Now back to the branch to claim bragging rights. Maybe. Just ahead on the right, are the offices of a customer who wasn't on your call list today. That's the owner's truck parked outside. Do you stop, or keep on going to the branch? Or, do you just call it a wrap and head for the house? After all, you've had a successful day. You deserve a little rest and relaxation. What would you do?

I won't bore you with stories of sales reps who did stop and who walked away with big orders that they might have missed if they'd just kept driving. I'm not even going to load you down with statistics and hypothetical math equations. "Let's see. One extra call per day times a twenty percent probability of a sale, divided by, blah, blah, blah..."

You've heard the stories and you weren't impressed in the first place. Maybe you didn't even believe them. Believe this. If you do make that extra call a day, it will make a significant increase in your salary every month. Even an extra call a week can make a noticeable difference in your next paycheck. Guaranteed.

And that's just one of the habits of highly profitable salespeople. You know them. They lead the branch in sales and profits. They drive expensive trucks, win the top awards, and seem to have all the luck.

But, the highly successful salespeople know that luck has little to do with it. They apply a set of habits that their less successful counterparts are either unaware of, or too lazy to use.

As the saying goes, there are no born salespeople. They had to acquire the habits in on the job training. Some of the habits they acquired at great expense. Others they stumbled on by accident. Fortunately, you can benefit from their experience and knowledge by following these seven habits of highly successful salespeople.

Habit 1: Make one more sales call. For the next thirty days, commit to see one customer per week beyond what is on your call schedule. It doesn't have to be at the end of a day. Unless it throws you behind schedule, make the call while you're in the area. You never know when you'll stumble upon an opportunity. Keep a record of these calls. Make it simple. Make a check mark in your planner if you get an order. Write a "P" if you felt the call was productive. Write a "B" if you thought the whole thing was a bust.

Habit 2: Take Risks. Pursue opportunities that others say are beyond you. Take a chance on the long shot. Leave your complacency zone. Go outside your circle of friends and your regular contacts. New friends can lead to new opportunities. Spend some time and money on your education. Look for workshops and seminars. Highly successful salespeople don't wait for their company to provide training. They take responsibility for their continuing education.

Habit 3: Be trustworthy. Long-term relationships result from long-term trust. In the beginning, you have to furnish evidence of that trust. That means displaying trustworthy qualities such as dependability, punctuality, and accountability. Over time, consistency supports the evidence. Be dependable in the small things as well as the large. Follow through, keep promises, and take ownership of every interaction with your customer.

Habit 4: Ask the Right Questions. Three months after receiving a promotion to outside sales, the man behind my promotion began to have regrets due to my lackluster performance. One day in a heart-to-heart (you know, the talk before they fire you) he came right to the source of the problem. "Mike, I don't think you're asking for the order," he said. He was right. I thought all I had to do was show up and customers would give me an order just for being present. It rarely works that way. Many sales people are afraid of "being pushy." They think they're asking when they say, "You don't need anything today, do you?" or "Guess I can't talk you into buying something." This attempt at homespun charm may have worked in Mayberry, but you'll starve to death in the real world. Use simple open-ended questions.

Habit 5: Listen Interactively: Ah, yes, the difficult art of listening. Listen with empathy to understand the speaker's words. See things from the customer's perspective. It better prepares you to offer your customer a more personalized solution. Listen respectfully. Leave yourself out of it. Don't try to "mind read" by anticipating what the customer is going to say. Pretend as if your livelihood depends upon what your customer says. Oh yeah. It does!

Habit 6: Act enthusiastic and you'll be enthusiastic. Many skilled and knowledgeable salespeople fail because they don't have any spark or excitement in their performance. It comes across to the customer that they simply don't care. Maybe you feel it's not in your nature to show enthusiasm, but the good news is that "feeling follows action." The next time your morning begins with a flat tire, and the neighborhood dogs have turned over the garbage can and scattered trash all down your street, instead of saying, "It's going to be one of those days," try this instead. Find a secluded place, pump your fist in the air and shout three times, "Act enthusiastic and you'll be enthusiastic." You'll be amazed at the difference it makes in your day.

Habit 7: Go the Extra Mile. Many salespeople talk about great customer service. Few deliver. The stories are legendary: the hardware salesman who mowed the customer's yard after he sold him a lawnmower. The deli manager who delivered a hot meal when a customer discovered an item missing from her order. The rental car employee who has a cold drink waiting in the cup holder. The extra mile is about action, not words. Exceeding your customer's expectations is a sure way to earn their loyalty.

Once you have found a car follow this checklist to make sure everything is OK with the car. I want to let you know yes people are out here trying to pass of their old junk, and yes at first be cautious of this and yes if you have a mechanically inclined person to bring with you please by all means do that. But if you follow this checklist use common sense and listen to what the seller is telling you, you will have no problem finding good deals and either saving yourself money or making money by reselling the cars for profit.

Be ready to examine the car. Wear some clothes where you can get a little dirty if need be, bring a notebook, flashlight, pencil, and this checklist.

Checklist to determine if you should buy or walk away

1. Have cash ready (maybe not on hand but ready) cold hard cash gets you some amazing deals
2. Be OK with walking away from the deal if it's not a good fit (this is so important)
3. Test drive the car feel for everything, pulling how it shifts, how it turns, how it stops and how it accelerates
4. Briefly check over all the electronic components of the car. The headlights, the windshield wipers, the windows, the seats, the heat, the air and the radio
5. Check the head gaskets (this is a common problem with cars with more than 80k miles) see below for the list of how to check the head gaskets
6. Use a flashlight look under the car for the frame the body sits on this you're looking for rust holes not rust but actual holes. This happens in the north of the USA. Not much of a problem in the south
7. Turn on and turn off the car 2 times to identify any starting issues or check engine lights that come on
8. Once they show you the automobile title check the name, check to see if the Vin numbers match (although I've never had that problem), and make sure there are no scratch outs on the title
9. If you decide this is a good car for you tell the owner lets go to the local title bureau. If you don't know where the closet one is just put your county name in and put local title bureau. To change the title over. They have notaries on hand right there and it will eliminate any chance of scams

Once you have the car in your name read my post about cleaning it up, most used car owners will sell you the car kind of dirty, and that's OK because thanks to their laziness you can easily say well judging by the condition I can offer you 300 below what they're asking thanks to that alone. (it's worth a try)

One of the more common problems with buying used cars is blown head gaskets, head gasket is the gasket that keep the coolant and oil separate, and if the coolant start to get mixed in with oil your compression will be going away in your car very soon and you will have an expensive repair on your hand. The head gaskets being blown will also warp the motor on occasion and when repaired the actual motor head will have to be machined to be smooth again. All this being said if you get to the point of identify automobiles that have bad head gaskets and can either do the repair yourself or find a good mechanic or machinist to do your head gaskets problem cars for you there is a great potential for profit in just this niche market alone. But the following checklist is a basic way for you to check and identify if the head gaskets are bad.

How to check for a bad head gasket.

• do not open a radiator cap on a warm or hot car, it will burn you
• look for splash marks coming from the radiator or reservoir area
• look for bulges in the radiator hoses
• is the reservoir empty, the coolant has to be going somewhere if it's not in the car
• do you smell a sweet smell? Coolant will give off a sweet smell when its getting into the motor
• is there even a slight access of smoke coming out the tail pipe
• pull the oil stick does it look good like fresh changed oil or does it look milky
• check the oil and tailpipe after your test drive

If you want to buy a used car, you are likely to head online to browse used car listings on websites like Craigslist.org. Right away, you notice two very different types of used car listings. Type one is full of information and detailed. Just about any question you could think of asking is answered in the listing. Type two is lacking information; you are lucky if you get the vehicle's make, model, and year. And wait! A picture? No way!

When buying used cars online or at least researching them, you as a seller want as much valuable information upfront. So why is that half of all vehicle sellers barely provide you with any?

Lazy, Lazy, and Really Lazy

Lets face it, some people are lazy. If a seller paid $5,000 for a used Ford Escort ten years ago, they know that they will be lucky to get $1,000 for it now. A thousand dollars may seem like a lot to you and me, but it isn't to everyone. Some people are just plain lazy. Others are lazy when they don't stand to reap a huge profit. They live by the thinking that it is too time consuming to type up a detailed vehicle listings and take and upload pictures then they'll only get a few hundred or thousands of dollars.

No harm will come from contacting sellers via email or phone to gather more information about the used car for sale. But think of it this way: if the seller is too lazy to provide detailed information online, were they also too lazy to properly take care of the vehicle too? No guarantees that this is true, but definitely something to consider.

Inexperienced at Selling

It is hard to tell if a seller is too lazy to gather information such as mileage, recent repairs, and so forth. So the next best option is that they are an inexperienced car seller. Lets take for example the college student who needs money for living; she is trying to sell a car that her parents bought her for her 16th birthday. Unless an avid car fan herself, she may be unaware that all car buyers want the most recent mileage, interior color, recent repairs, cosmetic defects, and so forth. So she doesn't include it.

Once again, no harm will come from contacting the seller to ask for more detailed information. Right now there are probably millions of people around the world trying to make a living online; their numbers are increasing by the day, and with good reason. When you consider all its advantages there's no doubt that selling online is just about the perfect start-up business opportunity. You can get going with little or no start-up capital and if you specialise in electronically delivered information products you need not tie up any money in physical stocks of product. Remember too, that e-mail and website marketing is practically free when compared with traditional print and broadcast media. Most importantly of all, perhaps, your online store can be open 24/7, the year round, taking automated orders from millions of potential customers worldwide.

So doesn't it sound as though it should be a cinch to set up a little online business and wait for the money to roll in while you head for the beach or the golf course? Truth be told, that's not a lazy man's fantasy, but a way of life that's real and attainable. And there are many living it right now. Sadly though, there are also many hopeful newbies who not only are not making any money, or making very little, but are actually losing it. There can be many reasons for this, ranging from purely technical problems to weak sales copy and the good news is that these are usually easily soluble either with a little work and research on your own part, or with the help of the many professionals who offer these services.

But there's one mistake that's always and invariably fatal to your business - no exceptions. That's when you bring to the market a product which the market doesn't want. Now let's be very clear here. It doesn't matter how good you think your product is; or how much your partner or best friends like it. The market rules. And if the market says it sucks, it sucks. And neither the sum of advertising expertise on Madison Avenue nor the hottest direct marketing copywriter in the world will save it for you.

In case you still doubt this key point, let me give you an example from British industry. Back in the 1980s one of our best known inventor entrepreneurs was Sir Clive Sinclair. In the days before PCs he had made his name and a great deal of money as the developer of one of the first pocket calculators and other devices. Then for reasons perhaps known only to himself, Sir Clive decided to move into the field of personal transport and came up with the supposedly revolutionary electric car, the C5.

With Sinclair's reputation he was able to secure massive publicity for the launch and indeed he could point to plausible advantages for the vehicle. It was economical, non-polluting, manoeuvrable in city traffic and easy to park. On the downside, though, the car was slow, of restricted range and looked downright dangerous alongside thundering conventional traffic. Worst of all perhaps, it exposed the user not just to the elements and apparent danger, but to widespread and immediate ridicule. The public took one look; said thanks but no thanks, and the project was dead.

For all his undoubted inventive genius, you see, Sinclair had neglected one of the fundamental rules of all business success: - research your market!

Problem is, though, that this inviolable rule can be tough in the observance for the eager new starter who's just bursting with enthusiasm to get a product online and earning some money. Do you want to start in business by carefully researching a number of different niche markets before going to all the trouble and expense of producing a precisely tailored e-book or piece of software to meet its needs? Thought not; although you'll make a lot of money if you do! But best leave that until later in the day when you have your business established and making you a comfortable living.

And that day need not be very far away, because fortunately there is an alternative and much quicker way of getting started, through what are known as resell rights. Put simply this involves purchasing a license to sell a product already created by another.

Online these are currently offered on a huge variety of products, typically e-books and software programs. Creators will usually offer resell rights when they do not have the time, money, or expertise needed to sell their finished product. Some people are just much more interested in researching and creating new products than in marketing them (Sir Clive Sinclair being an excellent example!).

So this can be a really great symbiotic, or win/win relationship. The product creator is earning an income from the sale of the rights in addition to anything he may make from selling the product itself. Moreover, he will benefit from the "brand recognition" he will achieve by having his product sold in far greater quantities through his resellers than he would be able to obtain on his own.

You as reseller will benefit from having a ready made quality product you can sell in unlimited quantities to visitors to your site. And once you have recouped the cost of your reseller's license, which will seldom take more than a handful of sales, you are into the zone of pure profit, retaining all further income for your own.

If this sounds attractive, it is! The profit potential of this kind of business is truly astronomical, and increasing all the time as more and more customers come online around the world.

But there is a catch, however. None of the above significant advantages of using resell rights remove the need to research your market. Before buying your licence you still need to pick a product that sells, and you can't do this by guesswork, by selecting a product that you happen to like, or a niche in which you have an existing interest (although it does help to have a passion for the one you eventually choose). To make money you must research the market and learn what customers want and need to buy. Doing so will allow you to obtain the resell rights to a product that will be in high demand, and which will bring you correspondingly high sales and profits.

Luckily this is not at all difficult do, although you will need to set aside a little time. If you balk at this, just remember that once you have your hot-selling product online you're well on the way to a lifestyle that the vast majority of people will only ever dream of.

Now unsurprisingly perhaps, the best way to learn about the products, topics, or issues that are currently popular on the internet is to use the internet. With online message boards, many internet users post questions and product requests. If you are able to find a product, such as a specific software program or e-book, that is being requested on a large scale, that product may well be able to turn you a profit.

This research may seem like it would be very time consuming, but it needn't be. The joy of the internet is that it's just so vast that there's bound to be an area of human interest - probably as yet largely untapped - that you can find and develop into a successful product very quickly. It helps of course, if you have an existing interest in that subject, but it's by no means essential. What is vital, however, is that it's a subject in which a significant number of other people are interested, because they're your potential customers and your potential profits.

Have you ever ran out of gas and had to push your car? Come on, we were all teenagers once, trying to eke one more mile from the tank of fuel, or just experimenting to see how far under E you could get the needle to go. That's one of my favorite episodes of SEINFEILD, when Kramer gets the car salesman to "KEEP ON GOING!" just to see how far they could get.

Actually, that could be a really good mantra for your REI career. KEEP ON GOING. That's the secret to reaching Critical Mass. But let's define it before we get there.

When your car ran out of gas, you had to push it. Its simple physics, which I'm awful at, but the principle is the same. A body at rest will remain at rest unless acted upon by an outside force. Which means the car won't move until you push it. So you sit there and shove and heave, and ho, until the wheels inch forward. Then what happens? As the car gains momentum, it begins to move faster and easier, and once it reaches a certain speed, you just have to keep the pressure constant and it will almost roll on its on. Almost automatically.

And if you ease off the pressure? The car slows back down, eventually coming to a complete stop. Then you have to spend even more energy just to get back to where you were. What if someone helps you push the car? Then you can reach your maximum momentum (critical mass) even faster.
So your REI career right now may be like the stalled car. You need an outside force to act upon you to get you up off your lazy bottom and out in the field. If you don't think right now is the best time to employ a buy and hold strategy, and put cash in your pocket every month, then you need to go sell life insurance. If you think you can't flip for profit, then it's time to hit the job search sites and find a less successful, less easy career.

Still here? Good, because now I'm going to let you in on a little secret. If you want to reach critical mass in your REI career quickly, you just have to follow a map. The market today is just like the market in 1989-90 (same President, with the same last name, and the same contender going for his title). What that means for you as an REI is that while the media is screaming about how bad things are, they will go up again. In some pockets soon.

Other, more experienced REI's have been through this before, and they have written books (maps) about it, and created courses about it. Now is the time to educate yourself about the strategies you can use in REI. When is the best time to flip? How do you assign a contract? What's the best way to buy and hold?

How do you define critical mass? Like most areas of success, the definition is almost always up to you. Do you want sellers to call you and beg you to buy their properties at fifty cents on the dollar? Do you want to earn an extra $10K per month by signing a piece of paper and then assigning it to another investor? Do you want to get 10 properties under your belt in 4 weeks, and cash flow $4000 per month?

Critical Mass is when you expend the same amount of effort (follow a systematic approach to success) and reap greater results from that effort. It might go something like this. Wake up Monday morning, check your e-mail for the 10 deals sellers sent you overnight. Mail out 25 postcards. Drive to view 4 property appointments. Draw up 2 contract offers. Call your realtor buddy to tell him what to send you next. Take the afternoon off to go fishing. Wake up Tuesday morning. Check your e-mail, respond to deal offers. Mail out 25 letters. Go by the properties you're flipping to check the progress of the work. Accept the phone numbers from your contractor of FSBO's he's seen while riding around. (he gets a bird dog fee if you close a deal). Visit the title company to sign on a property you flipped. Drop by the bank to deposit the check. (they call you sir now).

You get the idea. REI will give you the freedom to live the life you want, but that life must include a love of finding the deal. Finding the deal means asking people the Why questions. Why are you selling? Why won't you give me the low low price? Why don't you want to flip this yourself?
Your critical mass will come once you've pushed past the initial efforts and it becomes second nature, to make the calls, to send the postcards, to visit the neighborhoods you want to buy in, to go to the REI meetings in your city, to do the one thing extra today, that will turn into another $10K next month, that you can plow back into Real Estate and generate an extra $100K per year with no effort at all.

Where can you buy books, music, movies and the infrastructure to build the next MySpace, Flickr or YouTube?

Amazon.com has the worlds biggest retail site. That takes quite a bit of infrastructure to run a site like that...right? But an infrastructure like that is also a valuable commodity if you can monetize it...Amazon seems to be trying to do just that. They want to provide the infrastructure that will power the next wave of web sites. The amazing part of the Amazon Web Services offering is that there are no setup charges or other up-front costs required to setup a world-class scalable web application. If you can imagine it, you can build it...on the Amazon framework.

So here is what they are actually offering and what it means.

Amazon's Simple Storage Service (S3)

This is the gem of Amazon's web service offerings. Unlimited (theoretically) storage on tap. While there were some hiccups in the beginning and there are some limitations (5GB maximum object size), S3 provides scalable, highly available, secure persistent storage. I looked at this when it was first offered and while it was a beautiful service, it was hard to roll into certain types of products since control over the "secret" key needed to store objects was critical to security. It required certain back-flips to use a client installed package that could store objects to a central storage facility and pushing the data through a 3rd party web-host effectively limited the benefits of the famous S3 scalability.

Amazon's Elastic Computing Cloud (EC2)

This is so cool it's hard to fully describe. Think virtualization on steroids. Unlimited computing power on tap. No setup fee and a fee of 10 cents per processor hour and you've got something very interesting. It is a very technical service requiring quite a bit of knowledge and ability to setup but this just creates another market for technical shops to be able to offer support services for EC2 and the other services.

Amazon's Simple DB

Ok. By this time, if you have the next killer application in mind and all you need is some VC money to make it happen, you are starting to get excited. You are starting to see a strategy that will allow you to boot-strap your business and your application without shelling out the big bucks for the rack servers and the data center. Amazon's SimpleDB...one of the key elements that can pull it all together is exactly what it's name says it is. A simple database. But...a simple database that scales to extremely large numbers of connections, large numbers of tables and massive record counts. If you don't understand what that means for your application just think of it like this. You could build...well, the next Amazon.com on this platform.

Let's see...store the content on S3, put the data in SimpleDB and analyze the data for recommendations and other batch jobs using EC2. Wait a minute...this is really getting good.

Now, remember that I mentioned there was a problem with S3 with the secret key?

The problem was partly a security problem and partly a billing problem. S3 is billed on transfer and storage space. Not very much, but as you pack on the gigabytes, the pennies add up. So you either have to over bill to give you some room for customers who use more resources and make your profit on the backs of the customers who don't abuse the service, or you have to come up with some way of tracking usage. This is a tough thing to do and still retain scalability. Also, there is still the security issue. You have to really work to protect the secret key used to store your data. But...Amazon, either realized this and rushed filled the gap or always understood this and just didn't release the solution until recently.

Amazon's DevPay

DevPay is a commerce layer on top of S3 and EC2. Takes care of the security problem. Takes care of the billing problem. The only minor drawback is that the customer is a shared customer with Amazon even though you provide the application. For most applications this won't be a problem and if you built your app on S3, EC2 and SimpleDB anyway, well...you are already in bed with Amazon so this is not a tough pill to swallow.

The Other Stuff

Ok...there are other web services as well. There is SQS (Simple Queue Service), the Mechanical Turk (this one is really strange...you pay pennies for human power to perform repeatable, tedious tasks), the Flexible Payment Service (another commerce model that allows you to charge for services and goods using Amazon's commerce backend) and of course, Amazon's affiliate web services.

The thing about all this is that its not obvious. These web services have been rolled out quietly and the average person has no clue what this actually means. But there are quite a few businesses that are not only successfully using these services to launch their businesses, they are doing it with much larger profit margins and significantly less capital drain as a result.

They keep up like this and one day, there will be a handful of major players (especially if Microsoft succeeds with their hostile takeover of Yahoo) and a large number of medium and small web application/service providers with a large number of them using Amazon's platform.

Ok...now for my psychic act.

If Amazon does this well and proves the market (I have to admit, they seem to be doing it) , then Google will wake up and do the same thing and become the second major virtual application platform. Microsoft will realize that they missed the boat and quickly build their own boat on a .NET based platform and jump in.

The result with be good for all of us. New more powerful, more scalable applications running on AmazonSpace, GoogleSpace or .NETSpace with more features and lower operational costs.

Amazon CreateSpace -
With Amazon CreateSpace you can create ebooks, DVDs and video, set your own pricing, and sell your products directly through Amazon. You simply create your product and upload it to the CreateSpace site and they handle printing, recording, and distribution. You don't need to handle any inventory or take care of any of the financial transactions - Amazon does it all and you get a cut.

Amazon Marketplace -
You can also sell physical products via the Amazon Marketplace. And it can be any product you want - one that Amazon already carries or one that they don't. When you look at the product listings and you see those 'used' prices - those are people like you, selling their own products at the Marketplace.

There are several things to take into consideration when you sell on Amazon - for example, you'll be charged transaction fees and you'll have to stock your item and pay for shipping. As long as you're aware of all of this going into it, though, and you remember to include it in your pricing calculations, you'll be fine.

Now here's the real secret to successful selling at Amazon - Why would YOU want to sell a CD or a book or a bottle of perfume or a candle or.... if Amazon is already selling it? And why would you want to sell it at a 'used' or lesser price than what Amazon is already getting for it? Why not just promote the Amazon item, collect your commissions and call it a day?

Because - Your are shipping those items to the customer from your own home or office - and you can put whatever promotional materials you want into the box along with the product.

Let's say you've got an affiliate website promoting XYZ dog food. And while out and about over the weekend you found a whole case of dog biscuits or a couple of bottles of dog shampoo - either at the flea market, the thrift shop or maybe the pet store is having a clearance sale. And it doesn't matter what brand it is, either.

List those products right along with their counterparts that Amazon is already carrying but list them at an attractively lower price so that buyers will buy YOURS instead of Amazon's. And when you ship them out, include coupons or product samples and, of course, the information about your website and your product. You'll be putting your information directly into their hands! It would actually benefit you to make no profit at all off of your Amazon sale because of the leads you're going to get.

And don't forget - there are millions of Amazon affiliates out there who will also be promoting your product simply because they're sending people to Amazon.
